Though most of Black Sabbath's classic material from this album ("War Pigs," "Iron Man," "Fairies Wear Boots," and the title track) can also be found on the collection We Sold Our Soul for Rock & Roll, Paranoid is essential for the completist. One of the best albums from one of the bands to define heavy metal, this album is chock-full of the best stuff from Sabbath's Osbourne years. (Where else will you be able to hear "Rat Salad?") The luminescent lines and shimmering surfaces of Tron: Legacy will tantalize anyone who's lusted after the latest smartphone. The long-ago disappearance of his computer-genius father has left Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, Four Brothers) with existential ennui and a lot of money. When he discovers his father's secret workshop, he gets sucked into a computerized realm ruled by a megalomaniac computer program named Clu--who just happens to be his father's virtual doppelganger. To find his real father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original Tron, with a bit of his role from The Big Lebowski thrown in for kicks), Sam has to fight in gladiatorial games, drive in digital demolition derbies, and be stripped and dressed by slinky pneumatic babes. For all the techno-babble and quasi-philosophy the characters spout, this is a movie without an idea in its shiny head. It would be pointless to describe the many sillinesses because Tron: Legacy isn't actually trying to be smart; it's trying to look cool. It succeeds. Olivia Wilde (House) looks like the coolest action figure ever (if the entire movie could be nothing but the shot of her lounging on a futuristic sofa, it would be a masterpiece of avant-garde gizmo-fetishism). The facemasks are cool, the glowing skintight outfits are cool, the light-cycles are really, really cool--and let's be honest, it's all about the light-cycles. The broadcast series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) seemed to bring the adventures of Edward and Alphonse Elric to a dramatic and definitive conclusion. But the characters remain so popular that more stories about them were inevitable. The first Fullmetal Alchemist feature, The Conqueror of Shambala (2005), which took place after the first animated series ended, transported Edward to Weimar-era Munich. The events in The Sacred Star of Milos (2011) occur during Hiromu Arakawa's original continuity but at a new location in the familiar Fullmetal universe: the border between Amestris and its western neighbor, Creta. This disputed territory was once the land of Milos; caught between the rival powers, the remaining Milosians live in misery in the ditch-like valley that separates them. The Milosians hope to restore their country with the aid of Julia Chrichton, whose parents' research pushed the boundaries of alchemical knowledge. Any unconventional alchemy attracts the Elric brothers, who are soon caught in a web of interlocking plots and counterplots. Ed and Al learn that the Sacred Star is not a celestial body, but a "sanguine star": a Philosopher's Stone that would enable the wielder to control a vast, subterranean river of lava. Director Kazuya Murata and his crew build a story that feels appropriate for the characters but never impinges on the main storyline of Fullmetal Alchemist. Murata makes good use of CG when Ed and Al battle a wolf-chimera aboard a runaway passenger train, and when a ruined city is revealed to be an enormous, three-dimensional transmutation circle. The Sacred Star of Milos delivers the mixture of fast-paced action, warm human relationships, and broad comedy that fans of Fullmetal Alchemist enjoy and expect. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) remains one of the best and best-loved series of the last decade, but Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is not a continuation of the characters' adventures: it's a remake that follows Hiromu Arakawa's manga more closely. The adventures began on the dreadful night when young Alphonse and Edward Elric delved into forbidden knowledge and tried to use alchemy to bring their mother back from the dead. They paid a terrible price under the principle of "equivalent exchange." Al was reduced to a disembodied soul bonded to a suit of armor; Ed lost an arm and a leg, but has been fitted with the mechanical prostheses that earn him the title Fullmetal. The brothers wander through a world that resembles late-19th-century Europe, seeking the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which they believe can restore their bodies. Although the series has been expanded to 63 episodes from the original 51, many of the subplots, including the Elric brothers' encounters with Cornello, the corrupt priest in Liore, and their training under Izumi-sensei, are abbreviated or eliminated. Instead, director Yasuhiro Irie introduces the characters from the country of Xing who didn't appear in the first series: Prince Ling Yao, who joins the Elrics, and diminutive May Chang, who befriends Scar. Ed and Al learn that the Alkahestry of Xing operates in ways Amestrian alchemy doesn't, opening the possibility of regaining their original forms without using the evil Stone. But they need Scar, Dr. Marcoh, and May Chang to decipher the research Scar's brother pursued in Ishbal, which means keeping them out of the hands of Fuhrer Bradley and the Homunculi. The darker and more dramatic Brotherhood packs even more of an emotional and visual punch than the much-loved original series. In the wrenching episode 20, Ed discovers that neither he nor Izumi succeeded in transmuting the souls of the dead: his mother and Izumi's baby were always beyond their reach. If some aspects of the story are more unsettling, they're also more satisfying: the artists pull no punches, whether conveying the horrors of the Ishbalan War or the humor of Lieutenant Hawkeye needling Ed for denying he's in love with Winrey. Almost the entire vocal cast reprises their roles, including Vic Mignogna as raspy-voiced, hot-tempered Edward. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will delight both fans of the original and new viewers with no knowledge of the Elrics' previous incarnation. Two brothers search for a way to make their bodies whole again after an alchemy experiment goes wrong. This search pits these young alchemists against the magic-wielding military, mystic vigilantes and a group of beings created and named for the seven deadly sins. The brothers must fight for their lives and seek out the truth if they are to ever regain what they have lost.

Stanley Kubrick's 1987, penultimate film seemed to a lot of people to be contrived and out of touch with the '80s vogue for such intensely realistic portrayals of the Vietnam War as Platoon and The Deer Hunter. Certainly, Kubrick gave audiences plenty of reason to wonder why he made the film at all: essentially a two-part drama that begins on a Parris Island boot camp for rookie Marines and abruptly switches to Vietnam (actually shot on sound stages and locations near London), Full Metal Jacket comes across as a series of self-contained chapters in a story whose logical and thematic development is oblique at best. Then again, much the same was said about Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, a masterwork both enthralled with and satiric about the future's role in the unfinished business of human evolution. In a way, Full Metal Jacket is the wholly grim counterpart of 2001. While the latter is a truly 1960s film, both wide-eyed and wary, about the intertwining of progress and isolation (ending in our redemption, finally, by death), Full Metal Jacket is a cynical, Reagan-era view of the 1960s' hunger for experience and consciousness that fulfilled itself in violence. Lee Ermey made film history as the Marine drill instructor whose ritualized debasement of men in the name of tribal uniformity creates its darkest angel in a murderous half-wit (Vincent D'Onofrio). Matthew Modine gives a smart and savvy performance as Private Joker, the clowning, military journalist who yearns to get away from the propaganda machine and know firsthand the horrific revelation of the front line. In Full Metal Jacket, depravity and fulfillment go hand in hand, and it's no wonder Kubrick kept his steely distance from the material to make the point. --Tom Keogh
