Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Vol. 2 Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Vol. 2
Sale Price: $4.51

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s, Volume 2 is pure nostalgia for those who remember rolling out of bed in their pajamas to eat a bowl of cereal in front of the TV. While some of the Hanna-Barbera characters on this disc still feel alive and hilariously goofy, others haven't weathered time so well. But that's what the remote is for; just flip through the long menu of cartoon episodes. It's great fun to pop the DVD in and choose what to watch--maybe even more fun than it was sitting through less funny episodes back in the day, hoping for a classic. Disc 1's highlights alternate between shows starring silly, anthropomorphized animals in displays of physical and verbal comedy, and those that feature humans. They include the well-loved "Bugs Bunny Show," and a sweet segment from "Wally Gator" called "Droopy Dragon." While Wally looks and sounds like the reptilian version of Yogi Bear, he's still the most "swinging navigator" from the swamp, as the title song goes. As for human fantasy, there is a wonderfully obscure episode from "Adventures of Young Gulliver" called "Dangerous Journey." Disc 2 goes back to the jungle with "Quick Draw McGraw," the "Peter Potamus Show," and "Magilla Gorilla." While these shows are rather corny, the "Road Runner Show" still holds up as a genius concept. As in the early "Pink Panther," there's no dialogue as the Road Runner and his hungry antagonist, Coyote, taunt each other. The show's humor unfolds through the visuals of the contest and through the innovative soundtrack, all zoom, screech, and whiz to depict the speed with which the roadrunner outruns his predator. Road Runner's "beep beep" followed by the flash of his little red tongue punctuates the cartoon's sonic composition. While the 1960s episodes of Hanna-Barbera cartoons share character voices and themes--such as animals outsmarting flustered hunters, cops, or zookeepers--the production team milked an amazing variety out of those few simple formulas. The cartoons look oddly two-dimensional today, but Hanna-Barbera were pioneers in the television cartoon arena and brought many of us bliss on those treasured Saturdays. --Trinie Dalton

Two-disc set includes 34 cartoons from "Quick Draw McGraw," "The Space Kidettes/Young Samson & Goliath," "The Bugs Bunny Show," "The Porky Pig Show," "The Adventures of Gulliver," "Wally Gator," "The Jetsons," "The Peter Potamus Show," "The Road Runner Show," "The Atom Ant Show," "Tom and Jerry," and "The Magilla Gorilla Show." 4 2/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH); featurette.

What is a performance tire and do I need them?

The performance tires were quite different than their predecessors due to the extremely stiff side wall, the cap over the steel belts, the low profile, and the large traction blocks. This type of design gave birth to what is now known as a "speed rating." This was the first tire to have a speed rating of V which designates the tire stayed together on a controlled track at 149 mph. These tires were quite expensive. They were four times as expensive as the regular passenger tire of the day. Other tire manufacturers followed suit and began to create their own versions. The higher speed rating was also invented at this time. Today all tires have the speed rating stamped at the end of the tire size information for comparative purposes.

High performance tires migrated to the regular passenger vehicles because they improved handling, cornering, stopping, steering, safety, worked well with the ant-lock brake systems that were becoming popular, and they just looked cool. The only detriment to the performance tire is that it gave the vehicle a stiffer ride and people were used to the floating ride, which meant that the tires were not widely accepted instantly.

At this time, tire manufacturers started producing a whole new line of tires with different names that were unheard of. We had touring, ultra high performance, performance, touring performance, cosmetic performance etc.

As the time and the tire industry moved forward, we find that most vehicles came fitted with performance tires. With the improvements in handling, braking, and steering, the performance tire was now standard on the family wagon or sedan.

Now the other shoe falls. The first time Dad needs tires on the family mini van and is used to paying $200-300 for a set of four tires finds that now he has to pay $500-600! "I don't have a performance vehicle. Why do I need performance tires" he asks. Well everyone's hands were tied because that was what the manufacturer specified. People tried changing wheels and mixing tires, which is dangerous, and everything else to get out of purchasing the higher priced tires but to no avail. Even the used car appraisers when looking at a sedan that needed four tires would figure the old price and get burned later.

In conclusion there are plenty of benefits to having performance tires. They stop better, steer better, brake better, and lets face it they are just safer. They work well with today's anti lock breaking systems and the sophisticated steering and suspension systems. When you come to think of it, we are all performance drivers. Even though they are pricey, we just have to get used to it. After all, how can you put a price on safety?
