Archery Release

When I picked up a bow to start archery for the first time I found that aiming was a very difficult thing to do. I had been used to rifle shooting and I was trying to aim my arrow by sighting down the shaft. It's not very practical to do that with a bow and arrow. My coach was an elderly relative who was a veteran target archer and he gave me a few tips when I asked him how do I aim my bow?

Practice, practice, practice

My archer relative told me that I should draw the bowstring so that it touched the side of my face. Look at the target while pointing the arrow in the right direction then release the arrow smoothly. Sounds easy enough doesn't it?

I still didn't understand how to aim the arrow at the center of the target though and my coach kept telling me to always pull the bowstring so that it came to rest at the same place on my face. He also told me that the secret to accurate shooting was practice.

Consistency is the key to accurate archery

Then it slowly came to me that there was no definitive way to sight an arrow or aim a bow at a target. Well there might be but I still don't know what it is. The secret truly was in the practice, which enabled me to get consistent in the way I drew and released the arrow. Where the arrow hit the target was initially just trial and error but if you're consistent with the draw and release then you should be able to hit the same point of the target with every arrow.

How do I aim a bow at the center of the target?

Of course it then follows that if you can consistently hit the same place on the target every time all you need to do is make that place be the little circle in the center.

I'm still very much a beginner and there are a lot of very neat secrets to archery and how to aim a bow that I still have to learn. Most things require lots of practice but you need to read as much as you can about techniques too to make sure that you practice the right things.

Discover astonishing archery tips, tricks and techniques that will enable you to aim your bow and shoot arrows straighter, faster and with more precision than you ever thought possible! How do I aim a bow http://this-info.com/archery/howdoiaimabow.php

Why do olympic archers let their bow fall forward after releasing the arrow?

I've done bow hunting for years with a simple heavy recurve and I've never been into compounds, stabilizers or modern sight systems.
I do however stop to watch modren target archery with all the attachments when the olympics are on. I can understand the sights and stabilizers and I understand the archers paradox. But after the arrow has taken flight the archer follows through by letting their bow fall forward. As there are no Archery clubs in this part of the world I like to know how dose this action benifit?

Olympic archers don't grip the bow with their hands, this is the number one reason their bow falls forward. We put the grip against our palms but don't wrap our fingers around the grip. Our fingers are usually lined up to the side of it, this minimizes torque caused by the hand. Olympic style archery is designed to minimize the contact between the inconsistent human body and the ultra consistent bow. It's a lot easier to stay consistent when your hand is open and the bow is just resting on the palm than to grip the bow.

Now, the open grip alone doesn't make the bow swing downward. This is the job of the stabilizing system. There are many ways to stabilize an olympic style recurve. One way is to have a long rod in the middle of the riser there's another where you have two short rods at the top and bottom. With long rods you will see this swinging action, but when you have the top/bottom short rods, the bow will tip forward a bit but not swing all the way down. This is all a matter of preference, most elite archer set their bow to swing down, some fast some a slower roll. I personally feel that a faster roll makes me feel more secure and the bow feels more stable.

One thing to keep in mind, by the time the bow start to swing down, the arrow is long gone. The effect on the flight happens because of the archer itself. If you don't feel comfortable with your bow, the tension on your palm will not be consistent. In olympic style archery at the distances that we shoot, a slight difference in palm pressure will mean one arrow landing in the gold and another one in the blue at 6 o'clock.
