More Info On Barred Feathers:

Bill Edson, a renowned fly tyer from the Northeastern United States, developed a streamer that he named the Edson Tiger. Two variations of this fly are the light and dark. The following pattern is my variation of the Light Edson Tiger, which serves me well when fishing for brook or brown trout.
The dressing of this fly includes:
- Hook: Streamer 4xl or 6xl
- Tag: Flat Silver Tinsel
- Tail: Barred Woodduck or Teal
- Body: 4 or 5 Strands Peacock Herl.
- Rib: Very Fine wire. I prefer using a green color. As an option you can twist the herl around the wire.
- Wing: Yellow Pseudo Marabou topped with Red Pseudo Marabou 1/3 to 1/2 as long as Yellow Wing.
- Cheeks: Jungle Cock.
- Head: Tapered Thread.
- I tie this fly on a small streamer hook, sizes 12 - 14 4xl or 6xl. First, for those who wish to use a barbless hook, this is the time to bend the barb of the hook. Then secure the hook in the vise jaws.
- To tie in the tag, wrap thread toward the bend of the hook stopping slightly before you reach the bend. Tie in flat silver tinsel and wrap the tinsel 1/16" past the bend and bring it back over itself to the tie in point. Secure with two turns of thread. Clip off excess.
- Tie in the tail at the bend right above the tag using two turns of thread. The feather fibers should be the length of the hook gap; however, length is not critical and can be longer or shorter.
- The body materials are now tied onto the hook where you tied down the tail material. At this point you have an option to twist the peacock herl around the wire or use the wire alone as the rib. Peacock herl is fragile and in both cases the rib is used to give the herl extra protection.
- Next wrap the material up the hook, stopping approximately one or two hook eye lengths before the eye of the hook. Trim the excess herl. If you did not twist the herl around the wire, now is the time to spiral wrap the wire up the body keeping the spirals equal distance apart for ribbing. Tie off and trim excess.
- Select a piece of pseudo marabou. Leave the ends uneven by pulling the material apart and not cutting. Yellow will be tied in first. The length should reach to the tip of the tail. Pseudo marabou is a synthetic material which you should lock into place by wrapping two wraps around the material. Then take two wraps under the pseudo marabou, and then one more over the top as normal. You may also want to add some cement to the wraps.
- Repeat the above step with the red pseudo marabou, adjusting the length so that it is approximately 1/3 to 1/2 that of the yellow. Tie the material in the same as you did for the yellow pseudo marabou.
- Now tie in the Jungle Cock nail feathers for the shoulder. These feathers are tied in on the side of the fly with a slight angle. You will be fine if you follow the angle of the wing. The feather can be tied in two different ways. First you can tie in leaving the yellow, black and white showing or tie it in leaving only the yellow showing. The original Edson Tiger was tied with a gold metal as the cheeks. Leaving only the yellow showing would mimic this. I tie the jungle cock on leaving all the colors showing. If you're tying this fly to fish with, there is no need to buy premium jungle cock feathers. Brook and brown trout are not snobs. They're opportunistic!
- The last step is to whip finish and cement the head of the fly.
That's all there is to it. Tie it up, fish with it, and come up with your own variations. Don't be afraid to experiment.
