Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald, Vol. 4 - 1951-1961 (Collector's Tin)
Sale Price: $185.00

Film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, who provides introductions for both discs included in The Chronological Donald, Vol. 4: 1951-1961, points out that Walt Disney continued to make Donald Duck cartoons well after his studio had stopped creating titles featuring Goofy, Pluto, and even Disney figurehead Mickey Mouse. Perusing the nearly three dozen items included here, it's easy to see why the "wise-quacking duck" was still in business nearly 30 years after his creation. This stuff is brilliant: clever, funny, endlessly inventive, and sometimes even educational, it simply never gets old. Of course, some are better than others; "Trick or Treat," to name just one, features Huey, Dewey, and Louie, allied with the hag Witch Hazel, taking their Halloween revenge on their mean and stingy uncle, with not one but two original songs, one of them a hilarious "dance" number after Hazel puts a spell on Donald's feet, all crammed into about eight minutes. Elsewhere, we find traditional nemeses like Chip `n' Dale (particularly good in "Working for Peanuts," which was originally produced in 3-D) and Black Pete, as well as a variety of newer adversaries, both "human" and animal, on whom the hot-headed duck unleashes his notorious temper. Of particular interest to some will be the educational shorts like "Mathmagic Land" (at nearly 30 minutes, it's several times longer than the average cartoon in this set), which sports a weird, almost postmodern look and includes jokes about trees with "square roots," information about the value of pi, circles, pentagrams, pentagons in nature, the "golden rectangle" in Greek architecture, and a great deal more, and even some live action footage. Other rarities include "Grand Canyonscope," filmed in CinemaScope (with ample big, wide vistas as Donald lays waste to the Grand Canyon), a look at some storyboards that were never made into a finished product, and more. But the main attraction is Donald. Voiced, as always in those days, by Clarence "Ducky" Nash, the irrepressible duck ("Who's never wrong but always right? Who'd never dream of starting a fight?" goes the theme song) is one of the great creations in the history of popular entertainment. --Sam Graham
In this final volume, our chronicle of Donald's solo-starring shorts wraps up with some of his rarely seen, feather ruffling adventures from 1951 through 1961. And, for the first time on DVD, Donald's CinemaScope cartoons are presented in their original widescreen format. This collection of classics includes two of Donald's Academy Awardr nominated Best Shorts -- "Rugged Bear" (1953) and "No Hunting" (1955); a retrospective of Donald's career in comic books; and a storyboard presentation for an unproduced Donald Duck cartoon pitched by famed Disney animator Eric Goldberg. From bit player to superstar, Donald gave voice to the frustrations of everyone and in the process endeared himself to the world. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.

The Fountain (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)
Sale Price: $4.10

Science fiction and romance collide in The Fountain, the ambitious third feature from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), who labored for four years to complete this epic-sized love story that stretches across centuries and galaxies. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Aronofsky's real-life companion) play lovers in each of the film's three settings--16th century Europe and America (Jackman is a Spanish explorer searching for Incan magic), the present day (Jackman is a doctor attempting to cure his dying wife), and the 26th century (Jackman is a space traveler seeking a gateway to the afterlife)--who struggle mightily to stay united, only to lose each other time and again. Aronofsky may not have chosen the easiest presentation for audiences to absorb his theories on the lasting qualities of life and the transformative powers of death--the final sequence, in particular, with a bald Jackman floating through space in a bubble, harks back uncomfortably to "head movies" of the late '60s--but his leads have considerable chemistry (and look terrific to boot), which goes a long way towards securing viewers' hopes for a happy ending. Critical reception for The Fountain has been nothing short of bloodthirsty, with Cannes audiences booing, but there are elements to enjoy here, even if the premise throws one for a loop. Ellen Burstyn (who earned an Oscar nomination for Requiem) delivers a typically solid performance as Jackman's boss in the present day sequence, and special effects (most done without the benefit of CGI) are also impressive given the film's low budget (spurred by a mid-production shutdown after original stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett ankled the picture). And science-fiction fans whose tastes run towards the metaphysical (Asimov, Le Guin) will appreciate the attempt to present the genre in a serious light. --Paul Gaita

More Info On Bear Youth:

One of the saddest problems we face in today's society is the violence our youth are exposed to and committing, many people have asked and wondered, why has the violence among our young people increased from the time of today's parents. The sad and scary part of this epidemic is the fact that these are the youth which are suppose to be are out future educators, lawyers, entrepreneurs, policemen and leaders of our community. In my opinion there is one major contributing factor to this problem but, before I express this opinion, let me share other factors which are not helping with this social crisis:
· The influence of music and entertainment- It doesn't take a genius to figure out that teens want to mimic their favorite artist unfortunately, much of what they see are bad examples especially when it comes to degrading women.
· The easy access to hand guns- I believe in the right to bear arms but, only in the hands of responsible citizens and the system with dealers buying and selling guns is broken, go to most gun shows and you will see shady deals going on in some dark corner. And there is no reason why a citizen should own a gun more powerful than Law Enforcement.
· Peer pressure- One of the strongest factors especially if a young person does not have a person he or she can look up to and guide them in the right direction. My motto I constantly preach to my teen age son is, "be your own man" don't get pressured into getting into trouble just to part of the crowd.
· Video games- This one is difficult as today's parent were once addictive to video games like pac-man, asteroids and Donkey Kong the difference is that today's video games are much more graphic and violent, if not controlled and monitored, it will take over your son or daughter lives and could influence them in a negative way.
· Drugs & Alcohol- Unfortunately a part of American culture, today's teens face the same dangers if not more, than we as parent's faced when we were growing up. Experimenting with social drugs is how it starts and can very easily lead to more hard core drugs and to a path of destruction and violence.
In my opinion however, the factor which has contributed the most to this social tragedy is the breakdown of the family structure in today's society especially in the Hispanic and Black communities. I am aware of many troubled young people who do come from a house hold of two parents, but the number of troubled teens who come from single family house holds far exceed this. Ponder on this for a while, it is not a coincidence that some of the most successful ethic groups in America are those with strong family ties. Men in particular need to step up to the plate and take on the responsibility of being a father and husband and realize the importance role he needs to fulfill. Opposing and similar views are welcome here.
R Bonilla has been married for 18 years, successful in the corporate world and wishes to reach out to our youth of today and fathers in the hispanic community.
Weekend Activities for Japanese Youth
According to some studies, the youth of today are leaning toward the ‘dark spirit’ and the Japanese youth are no exception. Older adults claim that this so-called ‘dark spirit’ is very much different from the youth’s gloomy days. What are the weekend activities for the Japanese youth? Most of the Japanese youth have a taste for medical and pathological things. They are quite proud to announce that they’ve slashed wrists and that they were given prescription medicines. These things are really extraordinary and have caught the older adults by surprise. The music industry is also among the top influences for the youth. Rock groups are really popular and their song’s dark lyrics are gathering more fans than despite its minor-league status. Among the rock bands that older adults call as ‘sickness’ are Raphael, Mook, Kinaluna, and Caligari. You can often hear the Japanese youth talking about these rock bands because they want to share their interests with other teens. The youth are also into ‘Goth-Loli’ fashion. This kind of fashion seems to symbolize the ‘dark siprit’. The key color for this fashion trend is black although white is also used sparingly to create an effect. The whole image is almost dull and young teens usually add lace and frills. The youth today also use accessories such as crowns, crosses, and even wooden small coffins. Some young girls blacken their eye area as if to imply death masks. Way back in 2003, this fashion trend is the most popular in Japan. Perhaps you’ve already heard about the murder case in Kawachi-Nagano. A young girl killed her family and run away with her friend. These two youths became involved in the use of cold medicines, wrist-cutting, and the Goli-Loli. Because of this incident, the Japanese youth who were into these ‘abnormal’ things were pushed into the country’s spotlight. http://activities-of-youth.blogspot.com The Japanese youth, according to some studies, are showing a self-abusive behavior. This personality disorder is not new to the Japanese society. In fact, postwar Japanese behaviors were linked to coercion, self-abuse and addiction. The youth that time portrayed some sort of worker’s masochism and neo-masochists. They feel that if they worked very hard and bear any suffering or pain, they will be respected. Neo masochists had the habit of showing bloodied wrists to emphasize pain and suffering. Perhaps the youth of today are very much familiar with their past and they are trying to revive it. But no matter what their reasons are, the troubled Japanese youth should avoid the so called ‘dark spirit’. These things are probably the weekend activities that keep Japanese youth occupied. The younger generation after the postwar is already in their late 30s and 40s. They have realized their mistakes in the past and now they are on the road to healing. They don’t want the young generation of today to follow their paths. That is why the older adults are trying very hard to encourage teens to join healthier activities which can lead them to the bright side, not the dark side. Parents play a vital role in developing their teen’s behavior or personality. Since adolescence is a period of great adjustment and exploration, parents should monitor their teen’s activities. Help them to engage in healthy weekend activities. By doing so, they can live a happier and successful life in the near future.

Christians...are we confusing the youth?
bear with me on this...because I am coming from personal experience...
I heard about miracles and the power of Gods spirit all of my life....so, it was odd when I did NOT "feel" what others felt...or experience things the way they had been described to me......It seemed I could not "live up to" the standard of spirituality that I had explained to me....
then, the doubts begin...perhaps you are not loved by God, perhaps there is no God....
Are devout christians not expressing things properly and leaving the youth to believe that they can not achieve this "dreamy" life they hear talked about?
Is it possible that you are causing the youth to fall away to doubt...by not expressing things in a way that they can understand?
Of course you are. ( maybe not you personally )
