Director Richard Lang's THE MOUNTAIN MEN is a rough-and-tumble yarn depicting the fur trapping industry's final days in the pristine splendor of the northern Rockies. Even in such a remote region, the demand back East for top hats made of beaver skin resulted in the virtual extinction of beavers; silk hats were rapidly becoming the fashion craze, creating even more of a hardship on the gritty mountain men who depended on trapping for their existence.
It was a hard life, predicated on an individual's ability to survive in a harsh environment based on his wits and his bare hands. Interaction with other people was rare--the need to get along with neighboring Indian tribes a must. And infrequently, perhaps once every two or three years, the trappers would unite at a "rendezvous" to trade their pelts for cash and let off a little steam. To say that such a gathering was rowdy and violent is kind of like saying turtles have shells.
Charlton Heston is excellent as fur trapper Bill Tyler, a quiet man who only wishes to be left alone so he can find that last valley just teeming with beaver. But there's a problem: while fighting off a band of Blackfoot bent on stealing his horses and supplies he attracts the company of a young squaw (Victoria Racimo) who happens to be married to a chief with a very serious attitude (Stephen Macht). Thus Tyler and his new companion are forced to run, and run, and run some more to escape the warrior's wrath.
While Heston is solid in his role, Brian Keith absolutely steals the show as crusty Henry Frapp. Henry, a friend of Tyler's, is a cantankerous, foul-mouthed, fun-loving old coot who vividly breathes life into the mountain man persona. Keith dominates every scene he's in, and he's fun to watch.
Heck, THE MOUNTAIN MEN is fun to watch. The screenplay, incidentally, was written by Heston's son, Fraser, who obviously did his homework concerning this fascinating aspect of the Old West. Grab a plug of tobacco and enjoy.

There are cowboy hats and then there are Stetson cowboy hats, durable, affordable and exceptionally good-looking. But you know all that already, what you really want to know is once you've bought one how do you look good wearing it?
Stetson make two different types of western hats, one is the straw western and the other is, of course, the renown felt western, which was first invented back in 1865. Ever since then, generations of country music stars and cowboys have looked and kept cool under their hats, but what do they do to keep their Stetsons in tip-top condition:
No one wants a wet hat!
Felt Stetsons are made out of rabbit and beaver fur and whilst you can fill your hat full of water so you can give your horse a well needed drink, the problem most of us have, is how to dry the hat out once we've been caught in the rain. The first thing to do, and this also applies to the straw models, is shake off any excess moisture. Then fold down the sweatband and leave the hat to dry naturally. Don't leave the hat sitting on its brim as it will lose its shape.
If your straw hat is suffering from excess perspiration the same technique applies, fold down the headband and let the hat dry naturally.
It sure can get dusty on the plains, Pardner!
A hard-working cowboy always gets dust on his hat and the best way to get rid of it is either to wipe or brush it off. With straw models, a clean, damp cloth will work wonders. With felt, get a soft brush and gently brush counter-clockwise from the left side of the hat working towards the back of the crown.
Spots before your eyes?
It's one of the great unanswered mysteries of the universe. 'Why do grease and water spots somehow seem to appear overnight on your hat from nowhere?' One day it looks like a million dollars, the next - spots galore! The easiest way to remove them is to shake a little baby talc or corn starch on the offending area and then gently brush it off. Now you see 'em, now you don't.
A hat that's brim full of action.
There's nothing worse than a totally flat brim and the easiest way to retain a hat's character is never to rest it crown up. Effectively you're pushing the entire weight of the hat onto the brim and that'll flatten it. Always store your hat crown down preferably in a hat box or if you haven't got that a clean, dry surface.
Walk Tall.
Finally, the last thing you need to make your Stetson look good is confidence. Wear your hat with pride and you can't help but look good in it. Conversely, a diffident attitude can psychologically turn you into a B rated movie star. But by being certain in the knowledge that your hat is in tip-top condition, you'll find yourself walking with a confident air, in short say good-bye to the Dude and hello, John Wayne.
