This 1989 Howling entry gives horror and mystery clichés a stimulating twist. A mysterious Hungarian count invites nine celebrities and celebrities-in-training to attend the reopening of a Budapest castle after 500 years. What the group does not know is that the castle was sealed after a clan of werewolves committed suicide to prevent their familial evil from infecting the world. However, a baby survived, and the implication is that someone among the assembled is a lycanthropic descendant of that child. What follows is a murder mystery in which each member of the group is picked off one by one by the werewolf. Despite his blatantly low budget, and a slightly awkward opening sequence, director Neal Sundstrom does a good job translating Clive Turner and Freddie Rowe's decent screenplay. The real-life castle location is a fantastic character unto itself, and the cast breathe life into their roles and overcome some pedestrian dialogue to make them genuinely likeable (or in a few cases, at least charmingly disagreeable). It may not be at the same level as the original Howling or An American Werewolf in London, but Howling V is fun and provides a genuinely surprising ending. --Bryan Reesman

From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

This 1995 family film tries to put a fun spin on the story of a paranormalist and widower (Bill Pullman) who moves into a new house with his daughter (Christina Ricci) and meets up with the ghost of a dead little boy. Based on the comic book about Casper the friendly ghost, the film is a dreary series of awkward interactions between live actors and computer effects, and you can almost see Pullman and Ricci reconsidering the project while on camera. A few cameo appearances from uncredited stars help things a bit. But there's no way, based on this film, that one could have guessed that its director, Brad Silberling, would go on to make the exceptional drama City of Angels. --Tom Keogh

Peter and the Starcatchers

Humorist Dave Barry and suspense writer Ridley Pearson have clearly taken great delight in writing a 400-plus page prequel of sorts to Scottish dramatist J.M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan stories. The result is a fast-paced and fluffy pirate adventure, complete with talking porpoises, stinky rogues, possible cannibals, a flying crocodile, biting mermaids, and a much-sought-after trunk full of magical glowing green "starstuff." Ever hear of Zeus? Michelangelo? Attila the Hun? According to 14-year-old Molly Aster they all derived their powers from starstuff that occasionally falls to Earth from the heavens. On Earth, it is the Starcatchers' job to rush to the scene and collect the starstuff before it falls into the hands of the Others who use its myriad powers for evil. On board the ship Never Land, an orange-haired boy named Peter, the leader of a group of orphaned boys being sent off to work as servants in King Zarboff the Third's court, is puzzled by his shipmate Molly's fantastical story of starstuff, but it inextricably binds him to her. Peter vows to help his new, very pretty friend Molly (a Starcatcher's apprentice) keep a mysterious trunk full of the stuff out of the clutches of the pirate Black Stache, a host of other interested parties, and ultimately King Zarboff the Third. The downright goofy, modern 8-year-old boy humor sometimes clashes with an old-time pirate sensibility, and the rapid-fire dialogue, while well paced, is far from inventive. Still, the high-seas hijinks and desert-island shenanigans will keep readers turning the pages. Greg Call's wonderful black-and-white illustrations are deliciously old-fashioned and add plenty of atmosphere to a silly, swashbuckling story that shows us how Peter Pan came to fly and why he, and his story, will never get old. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson
A fast-paced, impossible-to-put-down adventure awaits as the young orphan Peter and his mates are dispatched to an island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They set sail aboard the Never Land, a ship carrying a precious and mysterious trunk in its cargo hold, and the journey quickly becomes fraught with excitement and danger. Author: Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson Reading Level: Ages 9-12 Format: 480 pages, Paperback Publisher: Disney Editions (May 1, 2006) ISBN: 978-0786849079

More Info On Ben Pearson:

Miami Dolphins 2006 Schedule
They won the last 6 games of the season and the media is all over themselves for the Miami Dolphins. Is this team really that great? Many analysts seem to think so. The Dolphins finished out the 2005 campaign by rattling off six straight wins against the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. Could this be the year that Miami returns to glory? Is their schedule soft enough to yield an easy 10+ wins and take the NFC East?
The NFC East has been owned by the New England Patriots for a good while now. The Miami Dolphins want to change all that. Last season, thanks to their last season push, they finished with a 9-7 record. This year, they are hoping to take the next step and get into the AFC playoffs. Their key additions include: Daunte Culpepper, Andre Goodman, Sedrick Hodge, Will Allen, Fred Beasley, Kelly Campbell, Justin Peelle, L.J. Shelton, Renaldo Hill, Deke Cooper and Mike Pearson.
Their offseason losses were somewhat mild. This offseason they lost Sage Rosenfels to Houston, Sam Madison to the Giants, Bryan Gilmore to the 49ers, Reggie Howard to Carolina, Matt Turk to the Rams, Gus Frerotte to the Rams, Kiwaukee Thomas to Buffalo and Tebucky Jones to rival New England. Their schedule could be a little challenging this season. Here's the breakdown.
Week One: @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Week Two: Buffalo Bills
Week Three: Tennessee Titans
Week Four: @ Houston Texans
Week Five: @ New England Patriots
Week Six: @ New York Jets
Week Seven: Green Bay Packers
Week Eight: Bye
Week Nine: @ Chicago Bears
Week Ten: Kansas City Chiefs
Week Eleven: Minnesota Vikings
Week Twelve: @ Detroit Lions
Week Thirteen: Jacksonville Jaguars
Week Fourteen: New England Patriots
Week Fifteen: @ Buffalo Bills
Week Sixteen: New York Jets
Week Seventeen: @ Indianapolis
The Dolphins season opens up pretty soft. The first big challenge will be the Steelers, but they will be without their starting QB Big Ben. Presumably, their next tough game doesn't come until week five against the Patriots. However, the Bills might pose a challenge. They always play the Dolphins tough, so you can't write them off just yet. It will be tough for this team to put together win streaks of more than a couple games. Their schedule is mixed up well. They could be in trouble if they are one game out going into the last game at Indy, unless the Colts
