Clint Black - The Greatest Hits
Sale Price: $5.31
|
|
|
Clint Black is often an amazing songwriter with one of the best pure voices in contemporary country music. However, since his impressive debut, Killin' Time, Black seems to have grown increasingly more attached to clever word play and abstract ideas than he is to emotion and narrative. And when the songs are as awful as "A Bad Goodbye" (an overwrought 1993 duet with Wynonna), who cares how good his voice is? The Greatest Hits collects, seemingly at random, 14 of his Top 10 hits released between 1989 and 1996, plus an album track and a live Eagles cover. However, it omits at least 10 singles from that period that were every bit as popular and, unfortunately, most of them were from his superior earlier years. Still, any album that includes "A Better Man" (a modern country masterpiece), "We Tell Ourselves" (an idea song that works), and "Put Yourself in My Shoes" (as good a male vocal performance as Nashville has heard in 15 years) can hardly be called bad. But it sure can be called disappointing. --David Cantwell

Bridesmaids (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging)
Sale Price: $14.98

Kristen Wiig co-wrote and stars in this raunchy comedy from "Freaks and Geeks" creator Paul Feig. Romantically challenged and financially troubled, Annie (Wiig) tries to rise to the occasion when she's tapped to be her best friend's (Maya Rudolph) maid of honor. But will Annie's competition with a controlling bridesmaid (Rose Byrne) bring the wedding plans crashing down? With Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, an uncredited Jon Hamm, and Jill Clayburgh (in her final film). R-rated version; 125 min./Unrated version; 131 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, DVS Dolby Digital stereo, French DTS 5.1, Spanish DTS 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; extended scenes; alternate scenes; gag reel; more. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set.
The delightful Kristen Wiig, who's shone in dozens of supporting roles and on Saturday Night Live, hits a bull's-eye with her first lead role in Bridesmaids. Annie (Wiig) isn't doing so well; her bakery failed and she keeps sleeping with a good-looking louse (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), but she's always had her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph, Away We Go) to buoy her up⦠until Lillian gets engaged. Annie becomes maid of honor, but another friend of Lillian's--the rich and lovely Helen (Rose Byrne, Get Him to the Greek)--wants to take over that position. Misadventures with bad Brazilian food, dress fittings, an unfortunate flight to Vegas, and a sympathetic traffic cop (Chris O'Dowd from British TV comedy The IT Crowd) follow, with increasingly hilarious results. Bridesmaids successfully balances raunchy comedy and character portrait. The embarrassing and socially catastrophic stuff, which in too many movies balloons into absurdity, is here kept in check just enough to allow Annie and the other characters to be multidimensional people--without the movie losing its comic capacity for cringe. (Actress Melissa McCarthy, of Mike & Molly, works miracles with a character than in most hands would be pure cartoon.) Wiig's enormous appeal keeps Annie sympathetic, even as she becomes more and more of a train wreck. Bridesmaids is both smart and dumb, raunchy and earnest, and altogether enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Sale Price: $2.00
|
|
|
Feel-good sleeper sensation stars Nia Vardalos (who also adapted her one-woman play) as a Chicago-based woman who works at parents Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan's Greek restaurant, but longs for romance and a life for herself. After taking computer classes, she gets a job at her aunt's travel agency, where she meets and falls for personable teacher John Corbett, who must now come under her family's scrutiny. With Andrea Martin, Joey Fatone, Gia Carides. 95 min. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Greek, Spanish, French; audio commentary by Vardalos, Corbett; biographies.
It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer

Death Becomes Her
Sale Price: $4.51
|
|
|
Wild black comedy from director Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump") with Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep as rivals who'll do anything to stave off growing old, from fighting over plastic surgeon Bruce Willis to obtaining a magical elixir from witch Isabella Rossellini. The potion not only keeps them young, but it allows them to survive "accident" after "accident" without dying! 103 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: Spanish.
If Robert Zemeckis's mega-hit Forrest Gump was too sweet for your taste, you may enjoy the undiluted bitterness of his previous movie, a cynical black comedy that was ahead of its time. Death Becomes Her, an outlandish parable about America's obsession with youth and vanity, exposes the corrosive side of Zemeckis's comic sensibility, the sort of scathing satirical edge he gleefully flourished in his overlooked 1980 Used Cars, which has developed a cult following. Meryl Streep has a ball as the deliciously vicious Madeline Ashton, a flamboyantly mannered actress who makes Bette Davis's formidable Margo Channing in All About Eve look like a wallflower. Goldie Hawn is also in razor-sharp comedic form as Madeline's long-time "best friend," Helen. Sensing a bargain she just can't resist, Madeline steals Helen's meek, plastic-surgeon husband Ernest (Bruce Willis) for her own convenience, and the two women become sworn enemies. But the real complications arise when the two are introduced to a secret anti-aging formula by a mysterious and exotic woman (Isabella Rossellini, delightfully ridiculous) that not only smoothes away wrinkles but actually guarantees immortality. As their undying bodies are twisted and mutilated by violent attacks on each other, both women grow increasingly dependent on Ernest for cosmetic repair. The pioneering digital effects inflicted on Streep and Hawn are as grotesque as they are imaginative and hilarious. Like James Cameron (The Abyss, Titanic), Zemeckis loves a technical challenge, and the new visual tools developed for this movie made his later work (in Forrest Gump and Contact) possible. --Jim Emerson

More Info On Black Eagle:

Canadian naturalist and painter Robert Bateman was born in Toronto, Canada, on May 24, 1930. Since childhood, he has been interested in wildlife and art. He was initially inspired by the famous "Group of Seven," a club of Canadian 'Realistic' painters. Bateman perfected the art of beautifully portraying nature & wildlife on canvas. While he started his artistic stint with creating 'Abstract' paintings of nature, he transitioned to 'Realism' in the 1960s. His focus was mostly on depicting beauty in its original form, for which he travelled extensively and used his keen observation power to accurately depict the various facets of nature. One of the methods Bateman has applied while painting his works is clicking photographs and using them as models for his creations. Robert Bateman achieved iconic feat with his work "Midnight Black Wolf."
While Bateman has also sketched and painted people & activities, in one of his interviews, he has indicated that sketching people was as easy as sitting and eating popcorn for him. He has also said that sketching wildlife offered more challenges on the account of it being an extremely diverse area of exploration. One of Robert's most famous paintings, as mentioned above, is "Midnight Black Wolf" that depicts a black wolf on a black backdrop. Some of Bateman's other most famous works include "Lawrence of Arabia," "Lost-Wildebeest," "White Encounter-Polar Bear," "Cardinal in Sumac," "Beech Grass & Tree Frog," "Clan of the Raven," "Tadpole Time," "Awesome Land-American Elk," "Cries of Courtship," and "Vantage Point - Bald Eagle."
Talking about "Midnight Black Wolf," Bateman himself says that he wanted to "show the ominous presence of a mature, lone wolf," creating an overall atmosphere of respect and seriousness around the animal, though not the one of threat. From the viewpoint of an artist, Bateman said that he found it extremely challenging to portray a "black animal on an almost black background." Looking back, although Bateman became a high school art/geography teacher, he never stopped painting throughout his career. However, it was only in 1970s and 1980s that his paintings and talent began getting recognition. His work started gaining popularity with time. Bateman has around ten books, based solely on his paintings. He has been criticized over his decision to allow the reproductions of his work, by people who believe that this act devalues the genuine art market. However, these reproductions have been extremely popular and are sold across print galleries in Canada and internationally. Even today, Robert Bateman continues to paint beautiful scenes from the forests. He has carved a niche for himself in the art world through his wonderful paintings, depicting nature and wildlife such as in "Midnight Black Wolf."

Famous Bird Watching Destination: Burgas, Black Sea Coast in Bulgaria
The city of Bourgas (also spelled Burgas)is located to the south on the Bulgarian Black sea coast, and is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria.
The City itself is situated in the Bay of Bourgas and is surrounded by Salt plains and protected marsh land. They're protected, as they are on the "Via Pontic" migratory bird route.
The Autumn bird migration is an experience not to be missed. This is the time of year when massive amounts of birds fly down the Black sea coast, making their way to warmer wintering locations in the south.
During this time, thousands of Black Storks, Harriers, Vultures, lesser spotted and short toed Eagles, Buzzards and many other species pass through the area. Rare European raptors can also be spotted as well as huge amounts of smaller birds, some incredibly scarce, as the salt plains, marshland, lakes and reedbeds around Bourgas make perfect cover for tired birds.
The large areas of forestry to the south of Bourgas are also home, and resting place, to many other sought after woodland species. The forestry areas are massive by UK standards and you could easily get lost, I would recommend hiring the services of a local guide, as wild boar and bears can still be found there!
Specialist Holiday companies in the UK are available with set itineries to explore this fabulous region during the migration period, or for the more adventurous there are numerous flights that go directly to Bourgas, which makes an ideal base for exploring the region with it's many Hotels, Bars, shops and Restaurants. It has a superb vibrant and modern atmosphere, whilst still retaining it's heritage.
Anyone interested in Bird watching, breathtaking natural scenery, exploring one of Europes last virtually untouched destinations or simply looking for a cheap holiday, will be delighted with what Bourgas and the South East corner of Bulgaria has to offer!
If you're interested in buying a holiday/investment/retirement property in this wonderful area of south east Bulgaria then please check out Bulgarian Breaks for more information.
