Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection - 15 Winners, 26 Nominees
Sale Price: $9.93
This good-as-gold compilation of animated shorts includes 15 Academy Award-winning cartoons dating from 1940 to 1965, including "The Blitz Wolf" (1942), "The Cat Concerto" (1947), "The Two Mouseketeers" (1952), "Speedy Gonzales" (1955), "Knighty-Knight Bugs" (1958), and others. The three-disc set also includes 26 Oscar-nominated shorts featuring animated favorites such as Superman, Popeye, Droopy, and more. 5 1/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH); audio commentary on selected cartoons; documentary; bonus short "What's Cookin' Doc?" (1944). NOTE: This set includes 15 shorts from "Academy Awards Animation Collection: 15 Winners."
The Oscar for Animated Short Film has been a useful if not entirely accurate gauge of the state of American animation, as this three-disc set demonstrates. The Academy created the category in the early '30s to honor Walt Disney's contributions to the art form. But most of the films in the collection date from the '40s and '50s, when Warner Bros. and MGM artists won most of the Oscars for pushing the Hollywood cartoon in a new direction that was fast-paced, violent, and very, very funny. Many of these cartoons remain hilarious, decades after they were released: "Birds Anonymous," "For Scent-imental Reasons," "Blitz Wolf," and "High Note." Others have aged less gracefully. Changes in racial attitudes have reduced Speedy Gonzales and Mammy Two-Shoes in the Tom and Jerry shorts to uncomfortable reminders of a less respectful era in American history. The collection also demonstrates that the Academy voters' taste can be capricious at best. Many of the best Warners shorts--"A Mouse Divided," "What's Opera, Doc?" "Duck Amuck," "Rabbit of Seville" and "One Froggy Evening"--weren't even nominated. Tex Avery, who did more than any other director to move cartoons in that brash, funny direction, is represented only by "Blitz Wolf" and "Little Johnny Jet." Like Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe, Avery never won an Oscar. Most of the transfers were made from first-rate prints, although a few are missing their credits and the framing of the Cinemascope films is problematic. The rarest item in the collection is "So Much for So Little," an animated documentary that earned Chuck Jones his first Academy Award. Extras include commentaries by animators and historians, and the interesting new documentary, Drawn for Glory. (Unrated, suitable for ages 5 and older: cartoon violence, ethnic stereotypes, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon (1. The Milky Way, 2. Yankee Doodle Mouse, 3. Mouse Trouble, 4. Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant. --Jeff Shannon
Schwarzenegger blows the screen apart as the topkick of a special forces commando unit whose mission to South America has hit a horrifying snag...in the presence of a bloodthirsty extraterrestrial stalker who turns the hunters into the hunted. Co-stars Carl Weathers, Jesse "the Body" Ventura. 107 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English; audio commentary; "making of" documentary; featurettes; bonus footage; more. Two-disc set.

Finding Forrester
Sale Price: $3.88
Sean Connery is William Forrester, an author unseen in public since penning an acclaimed first novel, who discovers his Bronx apartment has been broken into on a dare by prep school prodigy Rob Brown. Brown agrees to keep Connery's whereabouts secret if Forrester helps him develop his writing skills, resulting in an unlikely friendship that changes both men's lives in this moving drama. F. Murray Abraham, Anna Paquin also star; directed by Gus Van Zant. 136 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo, French Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, French; "making of" featurette; deleted scenes; theatrical trailers.
Finding Forrester could have been a shallow variant of The Karate Kid, congratulating itself for featuring a 16-year-old black kid from the South Bronx who's a brilliant scholar-athlete. Instead, director Gus Van Sant plays it matter-of-fact and totally real, casting a nonactor (Rob Brown) as Jamal, a basketball player and gifted student whose writing talent is nurtured by a famously reclusive author. William Forrester (Sean Connery) became a literary icon four decades earlier with a Pulitzer-winning novel, then disappeared (like J.D. Salinger) into his dark, book-filled apartment, agoraphobic and withdrawn from publishing, but as passionate as ever about writing. On a dare, Jamal sneaks into Forrester's musty sanctuary, and what might have been a condescending cliché--homeboy rescued by wiser white mentor--turns into an inspiring meeting of minds, with mutual respect and intelligence erasing boundaries of culture and generation. Comparisons to Van Sant's Good Will Hunting are inevitable, but Finding Forrester is more honest and less prone to touchy-feely sentiment, as in the way Jamal and a private-school classmate (Anna Paquin) develop a mutual attraction that remains almost entirely unspoken. The film takes a conventional turn when Jamal must defend his integrity (with Forrester's help) in a writing contest judged by a skeptical teacher (F. Murray Abraham), but this ethical subplot is a credible catalyst for Forrester's most dramatic display of friendship. It's one of many fine moments for Connery and Brown (a screen natural), in a memorable film that transcends issues of race to embrace the joy of learning. --Jeff Shannon

The Haunting
Sale Price: $2.69
Suffering from the extreme bad luck of being released at the same time as the low-budget The Blair Witch Project, this adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House attempts to update Shirley Jackson's psychologically terrifying ghost story to the era of big-budget, computerized special effects. Does it work? Well, let's just say that showing isn't exactly the same as telling. A prime example of bloated studio filmmaking, The Haunting telegraphs all its frights so blatantly that it forsakes any of Jackson's subtle horrors for the remedial scares of a clunky carnival ride. The story remains basically the same, with four people called to an old mansion for experiments in the supernatural, but instead of getting inside the heads of its main characters (as the 1963 adaptation by Robert Wise did so well), Jan DeBont's film deserts character development for the huge, glorious set design provided by Eugenio Zanetti (Restoration). Thus, instead of a well-drawn story you get... a well-drawn house, one that four very talented and underutilized actors--Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson, and Owen Wilson--wander around in endlessly (as Zeta-Jones puts it, the house is "sort of Charles Foster Kane meets the Munsters"). Taylor, as the hypersensitive Nell, is the unknowing lynchpin in the battle between good and bad ghosts and gets saddled with most of the expository dialogue of the mansion's gothic backstory. Zeta-Jones (showing some spark) and Neeson (showing none) are sadly reduced to providing reactionary shots of the film's disastrous climax, which mixes hapless new-age affirmations with computer-generated effects of ghosts and exploding windows, walls, doors, etc. For this haunted-house story, take a quick tour of the breathtaking rooms, but definitely don't stay the night. --Mark Englehart
In this special effects-filled version of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," Liam Neeson is a professor who recruits three people for experiments which he claims will help cure their insomnia. Little do they know that the house is haunted and they're in for the scariest evening of their lives! With Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Bruce Dern; directed by Jan De Bont ("Speed"). 113 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; biographies; featurette; production notes; theatrical trailers.

More Info On Black Hunting:

Bear Hunting In Canada - An Unmatched Experience!
Bear hunting in Canada is a hunting experience that goes unmatched. Canada’s black bears roam from Ontario to the west coast and grow to a much bigger size than what they do in the U.S. For a hunter who’s looking for a spectacular black bear hunting experience, Canada is the number one destination.
Due to citizenship laws, planning a Canadian hunting trip requires a few extra steps. Hunters must at all times be wearing an orange hunting vest and cap. There are no exceptions. If you’re using an ATV, a helmet is also required, as is up to date insurance. For a hunting license to be issued in Ontario, the hunter must have a previous hunting license from their state. Handguns are not allowed in Canada, and any non-residents will need to register their firearms with the Canadian Customs at the border crossing. Proof of U.S. citizenship and auto insurance (if you’re driving) will also be expected upon crossing.
Manitoba is a place to consider for your Canadian hunting trip. Riding Mountain National Park is notable for it’s bear hunting. The park grows some of the largest bears in the world, and the park has the highest population density in Canada. Manitoba also has a high population of color phased black bears, which means they range from black to white in color. A black bear doesn’t necessarily have to be black to be considered a trophy bear.
There are many outfitters to choose from throughout Canada to assist you in finding the perfect bear. Some hunt camps may charge a Non-Resident Hunting Preservation Fund payment. Bow hunting is welcomed by most outfitters, and many will allow you to take a second bear for an extra fee, however if the bear is only wounded and not caught, the fee is still charged. British Colombia has many hunting camps catering to the black bear hunter. The bears here grow large, ranging six to seven feet high, with skulls 18-21 inches, and many of the outfitters here welcome both the experienced, and the inexperienced hunter.
Canada has two options for bear hunting. The chosen method is often baiting. Most outfitters that offer baited bear will supply the bait and ask you not to bring your own, or add to the existing bait pile. The hunter sits in a ground blind or a tree stand waiting for his trophy bear to come by. The other method is to spot and stalk the bear. This is often considered the more humane way to hunt. This method requires a lot of trekking, but the catch is all the sweeter when it comes. This method is also more agreeable to British Colombia’s open terrain.
