Steps on puting in new stringers and a new plywood floor in a fiberglass boat?
I have a (about) 1970 closed bow runabout with a 55 outboard. The rotted floor, stringers, and foam (I think, I did not remove the floor, the previous owner did, and I see fragments of foam leftover) have been completely removed, and I am ready to replace! Can anybody give me the steps on replacing this floor. Do I need foam, what kind if so. What should I use for the stringers? Thanks for the steps for this project!!!!!!!!
Sounds like you need to:
1 remove the deck of the boat
2 remove the cockpit floor of the boat
3 remove the stringers (completely) and mark where they were
4 cut 2x6 or 2x8 PT lumber to fit (profile wise) where the original stringers were (you may have to make these out of multiple layers of PT plywood if the stringers will need to be high enough to support the cockpit floor)
5 let the lumber dry some (as new PT lumber is very wet)
6 glass the new stringers in (grind the areas where you'll be interfacing with the original boat hull). Lay up close to 1/4" of glass which will be about 6 or 7 layers.
7 either cut 3/4" PT plywood to fit in the cockpit and attach to the stringers with stainless steel screws or encapsulate PT 2x4s with fiberglass and use them as joists to span the stringers to support the cockpit floor. Cover the PT plywood floor with 2-3 layers of glass making sure to securely bond the floor to the sides of the hull (grinding the hull to ensure a good bond).
8 put all the salvaged parts back on the boat
9 carpet the new floor
10 brag/complain to everyone that comes out on your boat about how much work you put into it
