What to Look for When Selecting a New Crossbow

Many new crossbow buyers simply look for arrow velocity in a crossbow.  Though it is a very attractive feature and many believe it's necessary for increasing your success rate when hunting, the truth is there are many other factors such as your height and what you hunt that separate an enjoyable hunting excursion from a missed opportunity.

The appeal of high arrow velocity most likely stems from shooting a rifle.  However, it's difficult to compare shooting a gun and shooting a crossbow as they're built on completely different principles.  Crossbows work on the principle of energy, meaning you will not get a full return of the energy you put into the crossbow (drawing the string).

Because of this principle, it's very important to consider a number of factors when selecting a crossbow based on its arrow velocity.  If a crossbow is exceptionally powerful and has a high arrow velocity, that means you have to put in as much energy to cock the crossbow.  In this case, it will be impossible for most people!  Some crossbows just require more energy than your body can handle.  Beyond hurting yourself, there are other consequences as well.  Improperly cocking your crossbow can result in a loss of accuracy.  To make sure you select the right crossbow, consider your age and strength, but most importantly consider your height.  The faster and more powerful crossbows are longer and heavier, thus unsuitable for kids or men with smaller frames.  Most manufacturers will have a "size chart" to determine what crossbow you should be using.

Crossbow hunters most commonly hunt deer, but there are some out there who use it for smaller game.  Most manufacturers today will claim that any of their crossbow lines will be suitable for small, medium, and large game.  A powerful bow that shoots 300+ fps will be plenty fast, but all animals have a high reaction time.  It takes 1/10th of a second for deer to react, and 3/10th of a second for an arrow to travel 20-30 yards.  You don't want to believe that with a powerful crossbow, you'd be hard pressed to miss.

The next time you are at the shop, be sure to consult a local expert to determine what type of crossbow you should buy.  Remember to take into consideration how tall you are and what kind of experience you have with hunting.  A faster crossbow does not equate success.

How long can i leave my crossbow cocked?

i am going deer hunting this fall and there is a high population of coons in the area, it is 120 lb draw weight, i need a crossbow so i dont spook the deer. how long could i leave it cocked?

as soon as you get in your stand or situated where you are going to be hunting from.
