Is there a difference between laser sights and red dot sights?
I'm looking to get one for a 40 cal hi points carbine, just wondering if there is a difference.
the difference between a laser sight and a red dot is well,a laser sight projects a (normally red) light onto the target(you've seen in the movies where the bad guy has alot of red dots on they're torso)
which means if you see the laser on the target you'll most likely hit it(the only way to miss would be at a long distance)
the problem with a projected laser is that it does not work well in well lit conditions(nor does the red dot sight)and generally will not work well if the target is red(but only if the laser is red) and if you are trying to remain undetected these arent your best bet.(they are also illegal for hunting in most states,with some handicap exceptions)
a red dot sight projects a laser onto a transluscent optic(semi see through,just enough blockage to stop most of the beam,98% visibility still) which when looking through the optic appears to place an actual
beam on the target,when it actually just bounces off the optic,which makes it look similar to the laser by the shooter,the target will not see an actual beam projected,this helps when trying to remain undetected.
the red dot also does not work well in brighter conditions or at ranges(you must sight red dots in like a regular scope)
