Archery - the Weight and Length of Bows
Archery – The Weight and Length of Bows:
In Archery the most important factor for all is the bow. Taking this equation into consideration, We should also take in the weight and length of the bow that we use. For certain people there will most likely be a different weight and length combination they will need to be a better archer. So for this direction we will look at what may be the most important factors to decide upon. This in turn will help us each as individuals to decide which of these may be best for our needs.
Weight and Length of Bows
The weight of your bow, Should be the number of pounds that it will take to pull the arrow to its full length. So from this we see the weight the pound pull for the shorter distances of shorter length of draw can be estimated. The length of your bow will be determined largely by the length of the arrow used. So we see, A short arrow, Shot from a long bow will be apt to give a sloppy cast because the bow will not be an efficient instrument for this type of arrow. We would also see that a long arrow shot from a short bow, would cause it to be drawn over, Most likely weakening and breaking the arrow. Also to be mentioned, You should never draw a bow without the proper arrow. Long arrows, For long bows, Short arrows, For short bows.
There is a newer modern practice, This practice is for beginners to use lighter bows. This is essentially true, Especially for girls as well as woman. Girls and woman are often discouraged when first starting archery, Essentially when fitted with a bow that is to strong for them to handle. Taking this theory into consideration, The learners bow should light enough for them to handle with a degree of ease. This way they may concentrate on the form of there shooting, Also they will not have to struggle to draw there bow.
Example of Bow weight and length:
-
For Women – Bows in length of about 5'6”, 18 to 25 pounds
-
For Men – Bows in length of about 5'8” to 5'10”, Usually around 28 to 40 pounds
-
For Younger Boys and Girls – Of course lighter equipment will probably be necessary
Most bows vary in length from around 5' to 6' feet. Weights can vary widely, These are usually between 20 to as much as 60 pounds for target use. When it comes to group instruction the possession of extremely light bows, Lets say between 7 to 10 pounds, These are used merely for the purpose of learning how to draw the bow, Also so they may be drawn at Full Draw position. These will probably be made and equipped with twine string, It should also be noted these won't be used to actually release the arrow. These are used to provide an cheap way to practice the draw position.
We learn that the bow doesn't just belong to Robin Hood or William Tell but to all of us.

what is the bow with the heviest draw weight ever?
I've read about egyptian composite bows with a draw weight of 200lbs. and mongolian bows that are around 166lbs. Is there anything stronger than that?
At present time, that record is held by Mark Stretton of the UK. He pulled a 200lb longbow. Howard Hill was also said to own a 200lb longbow.
Now if you include crossbows on there, then there are arbalests that weighs somewhere in the 1500lbs range.
