Good Hair
Sale Price: $5.71
|
|
|
When one of Chris Rock's young daughters asked him an innocent question about having "good hair," the comedian probably had no idea just how complicated the answer would be. Fortunately for us, he decided to find out, and the result is this funny, informative, and highly entertaining documentary of the same name. Turns out that for a great many African-American women (and quite a few men, too), "good hair" means "white hair"--i.e., straight and lanky--while the natural or "nappy" look is bad. And oh, the lengths and expense women will go to in order to get "good hair"! In the course of the film, which was directed by Jeff Stilson and cowritten by Rock and several others, Rock first travels to Atlanta, home of the Bronner Brothers Hair Show, where thousands of folks buy and learn how to use new products (the show is also the site of the outrageous and climactic Hair Battle Royale, in which four stylists compete for money and fame). It's there that he learns about sodium hydroxide, better known as hair "relaxer," the "nap antidote," or the "creamy crack" (as effective as the chemical substance is for straightening hair, it can also be highly dangerous). In Harlem and Los Angeles, he investigates the extraordinary popularity of hair weaves, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars annually to create and maintain; Rock even goes to Madras, India, source of most of the hair used in weaves (for Indian women, tonsure, or shaving their heads, is a ritual act of self-sacrifice). Along the way, Rock interviews a great many young women with fabulous hair (including actresses Nia Long, Raven-Symoné, and Kerry Washington, and rappers Salt-N-Pepa), but he also talks to the esteemed poet Maya Angelou, as well as men like rapper-actor Ice-T and the Reverend Al Sharpton. Sharpton, who is very amusing (he's referred to as "the Dalai Lama of relaxed hair"), is about the only celeb who touches on racial issues, pointing out that while it's African Americans who use the overwhelming majority of these hair products, the companies who sell them tend to be owned by Asians. Some viewers may object to the film's lack of a strong socio-political stance, but others will no doubt prefer the lighter touch, including a hilarious discussion at a barber shop about dating women with hair weaves (basically, it's "hands off the hair, pal"). --Sam Graham
This hilarious and insightful documentary follows comedian Chris Rock as he sets out to explore the ways that hairstyles impact contemporary African-American culture. From visits to beauty salons and an overview of the wonderful world of hair straightening and extensions to insights from Maya Angelou, Eve, Ice-T, Raven-Symone, and others, Rock looks at exactly what constitutes "good" hair and why. 95 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, Spanish; audio commentary by Rock, others; theatrical trailer.

Them! (Snapcase Packaging)
Sale Price: $16.95

That ol' cinematic devil the A-bomb has spawned a colony of giant murderous ants bent on destroying humanity in this, the seminal big bug movie (an obvious and oft-credited influence for Alien among countless others). The special effects may be dated, but this brilliantly rational-sounding film has held up wonderfully in all other regards, including some starkly effective location work in the high Arizona desert, a genuinely inspired sound design guaranteed to bring on the creepy-crawlies, and an unexpectedly dry sense of humor (mainly personified by Grade-A egghead scientist Edmund Gwenn). This is essential viewing for all those who consider themselves science fiction or horror fans. Heroic hardcase James Arness previously played for the other team as the titular character in The Thing from Another World. --Andrew Wright
Landmark sci-fi classic chronicles how atomic testing in a New Mexico desert results in ordinary ants being mutated into behemoth killing machines. As the enlarged insects wreak murderous havoc across the Southwest, police sergeant James Whitmore teams with FBI agent James Arness to stop a pair of queen ants before they can give birth to another generation of terror. With Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon. 92 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish; theatrical trailer; behind-the-scenes footage. NOTE: This Title Is Out Of Print; Limit One Per Customer.

Emu Oil Pure Premium Australian - Powerful Skin and Hair Moisturizer
Sale Price: $18.80
|
|
|
Emu Oil 4 fl.oz. Emu Oil is a traditional Australian Aboriginal medicine and natural skin and hair moisturizer. It is recognized as complementary medicine by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia (TGA) for the treatment of burns, wounds, bruises, as ointments for dry cracked heels, for reducing scar formation in healed burn wounds, and as a pain reliever for bone, muscle, and joint disorders. Our emu oil is fully refined and contains all natural ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, and the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6. Please note that some producers sell a manufactured emu oil that has been clarified. This clarification process eliminates some of the most active ingredients of the product. Our emu oil is milky white, and each batch is analyzed to confirm that all essential ingredients are present at the natural concentrations. This oil is highly penetrating to the skin, and thus fully effective as topical treatment. InStyle Magazine featured actress Charlize Theron commenting on our product: "I'm not big into styling products, but I use this Australian oil to moisturize my hair."

Black music history â Historic events featuring black musicians â Tonic News
This year, when thinking about Black History Month, people have a lot to celebrate. There's the election of President Obama, the confirmation of Eric Holder as the first black Attorney General, and the birthday remembrances of President Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Yet for every Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King, there were entertainers like Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday who used pop culture to break down barriers. They communicated in song what was ignored in lectures while still forging a path for jazz, the blues and even rock 'n' roll. While there was once a time when these African-American trailblazers never earned a Grammy or a music Oscar or a hosting gig, there were also moments when reaching these milestones became a matter of history. The following are ten such historic moments.
1. In 1986, the inaugural inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included six African-Americans out of 10 total recipients: Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, James Brown and Little Richard. Aretha Franklin became the first woman inductee the following year.
2. Wynonie Harris' "Good Rocking Tonight" (1947) and Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" (1951) became what most historians regard as the first rock 'n' roll songs. Both artists were African Americans, with a teenage Ike Turner penning "Rocket 88."
3. W.C. Handy, known as the "Father of the Blues," popularized the genre with his ragtime classics "Memphis Blues"(1909) and "St. Louis Blues" (1914). The bandleader is honored in Memphis with W.C. Handy Park on Beale Street.
4. Though composed a decade earlier, Jelly Roll Morton published the "Jelly Roll Blues" in 1915 arguably making it the first notated jazz arrangement. Later in life, Morton would eventually die from a knife wound he might have survived if not turned away from a whites-only hospital in D.C.
5. In 2000, country singer Charley Pride became the first African-American inductee in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Pride scored 36 career No. 1 country tunes and, in 1994, received the Academy of Country Music's Pioneer Award.
6. In 1959, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie became the first African-Americans to win Grammy awards. Fitzgerald picked up trophies for Best Jazz Performance (Individual) and Best Vocal Performance and Count Basie won for Best Jazz Performance (Group) and Best Performance by a Dance Band.
7. After becoming a star, Sammy Davis, Jr. refused to perform in racially segregated venues. At the time, African-American artists were not allowed to stay in the Las Vegas casinos where they performed, but Davis' stand helped lead to desegregation in both the casinos and in Miami Beach nightclubs.
8. Isaac Hayes, known to the Twitter generation as Chef from "South Park," became the first African-American to win a non-acting Oscar in 1973. His classic "Theme from Shaft" won Best Original Song, joining the Beatles' "Let It Be"Â (1971) as the Academy's first recognitions of modern music.
9. In 1956, music great Nat King Cole became the first African-American to host a television variety program, "The Nat King Cole Show."
10. That same year, Harry Belafonte's "Calypso" becomes the first full-length album to sell over a million copies. The album, featuring the classic "Day-O (Banana Boat Song)," spent 31 weeks at No. 1.
