The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Twice in May of 2000, cables used to tow TDU-32A target banners broke while being towed by T2C aircraft of VT-9 flying out of Meridian MS. In each case the cable broke about thirteen feet aft of the tow point on the aircraft and the banner portion of the cable was not recovered. The breaks occurred or were first noticed following turns. This pattern of cable breakage caused an engineering investigation to be initiated. Dropping Egg experiment ... how do i make a good crate?
I have to construct a container that will prevent an egg from breaking as it is dropped from a spot no higher than 20 meters. i have to build a crate that will protect the egg. the crate must be less than 20 centimeters on any side(length, width,height) and have a mass of less than 500 grams not including the egg. I cant use metal, wood, and glass materials including fiberglass. i can use rubber bands, tape, plastic, cardboard, etc. i cant have parachutes or propellers. the outside of the package may not contain any material to aid the package in adhering the target such as tape, glue, etc. i will place the crate on the floor and drop the egg into it. any suggestions
You want the crate to absorb the kinetic energy of the egg. To do that you need the crate to collapse progressively when the egg strikes it so that the egg is decelerated evenly and smoothly. So build structures in the crate that will collapse onto one another.
