Nothing in their debut could really have prepared fans for the sonic assault the Velvets unleashed in White Light/White Heat. Freed from Andy Warhol's patronage (and Nico's vocals), Lou Reed and company strip production values to a minimum and turn out a primitive rock & roll masterpiece: everything on this record sounds distorted and abrasive. Depending on how you feel about these sorts of things, this makes it either their best or their worst record. Of course, underneath it all are some of Reed's greatest songs, from the title track to the wistful "Here She Comes Now." It all culminates on side 2 with the raucously joyous "I Heard Her Call My Name" ("And then my mind split open," Reed sings, and his guitar lets you know just about how that would feel) and the epic "Sister Ray"--10 minutes of transcendent, pounding fuzz as Reed searches for his "mainline." --Percy Keegan

If you believe everything you hear, Curtis is 50 Cent's bid to be hip-hop king--the rumor goes that he issued it the same day Kanye West released his Graduation CD to spawn a sales race and thus, a) establish superiority, or b) retire with his head hung low. But here's what might not have occurred to 50: Given enough talent and a fully loaded speed-dial--the kind that can raise Timbaland, Akon, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Eminem faster than the sickest rapper can stitch together a verse--it's possible for two diabolically good discs to drop the same day. Forgetting the Kanye competition for a moment, Curtis might come up short in a race with its creator's other albums--the rawness and reach of Get Rich Or Die Tryin' isn't here. But certain cultural moments (who would refute that the release Get Rich… was one?) can't be replicated, and what Curtis lacks in credible grit, it more than makes up for in finesse. Never let it be said that you can't be fierce and flow at the same time: "I Get Money" glides back to the old school in sound--there's a house party happening behind this track--but sends out a modern message, "I'll Still Kill," with Akon, underscores 50's continued thug-hood with a lethal hook, and "Follow My Lead," with the smoothie Robin Thicke, is a finger-popper worth 100 plays for its sly mood alone. 50 CENT CURTIS

Pay-per-view events are the bread and butter of pro wrestling. At nearly three hours, they're like monthly Super Bowls and surrounded with the same type of hype and drama. Fully Loaded captures the entire July 2000 event that went down in Dallas, Texas. Part of enjoying pro wrestling is understanding the soap opera that revolves around each match. If you're already a fan, no background is needed. But if you're just getting into pro wrestling, Fully Loaded does a decent job of summarizing the events leading up to all eight matches. There's also plenty of backstage "acting" and shenanigans to get the crowd fired up--like Chris Benoit destroying WWF champion the Rock's wardrobe or Kurt Angle trashing the Undertaker's motorcycle (never touch a man's threads or his ride!). The action inside the ring is as enjoyable, with a triple main event likely to please all WWF fans. The Last Man Standing match between Triple H and Chris Jericho is sufficiently bloody, while the 30-minute championship match between the Rock and Benoit is exhausting to watch. Not much is different here: hardcore fans will love it, while critics will still be shaking their heads in disbelief. --Dave McCoy

The simple pleasure of watching a living car squirt oil in a villain's face just never goes away. Disney, in their effort to revitalize the Herbie franchise, has made the wise choice of not trying too hard--aside from a small bit of skateboarding action, just about every element of Herbie: Fully Loaded would fit right into the 1963 original (groovily titled The Love Bug) or its various sequels. Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan, the fiery-tressed starlet of Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) wants to join her family's dynasty of race car drivers, but her father (Michael Keaton, Batman Returns) worries that she'll get hurt. Instead, as a college graduation gift, he buys her a junked-out Volkswagen Beetle--which turns out to be Herbie, a car with a mind of its own. Soon Maggie and Herbie are racing against an arrogant racing champion (Matt Dillon, Crash, There's Something About Mary) and duking it out with monster trucks, eventually hoping her father's heart will change. Herbie: Fully Loaded is formulaic fluff, but executed with cheerful enthusiasm; everyone involved has clearly embraced the mix of slapstick hijinks and light family drama. There's even a handful of cameos by NASCAR drivers. The result is every bit as ridiculous yet entertaining as its forebears. --Bret Fetzer

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is a big, fun, bubble-brained mess of a movie, and that's exactly as it should be. Its popular 2000 predecessor got the formula right: gorgeous babes, throwaway plots, and as many current pop-cultural trends as you could stuff into a candy-coated dollop of Hollywood mayhem. This sequel goes one "better": The plot's even more disposable (if that's possible), the babes, cars, and fashions even more outlandish, and the stuntwork (heavily digital, heavily absurd) reaches astonishing heights of cartoon silliness. Reprising their titular (and shamelessly titillating) roles, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu are having the time of their lives, especially when sparring with ultra-buff rogue angel Demi Moore (looking better at 40 than most women half her age) and Justin Theroux as a sleazy Irish mobster. Bernie Mac replaces Bill Murray as angel-sidekick Bosley (they're step-brothers, don'cha know), which is one more indication of McG's intentionally reckless stewardship of an intentionally reckless franchise.
