Health and Fitness on a Budget

One benefit of spending many years as a student is learning how to live a healthy life on a budget. Here is a list especially for those who say it’s too expensive to live a healthy life. Preparation here is an important factor.

Say goodbye to packaged breakfast cereals (even whole grain), they are expensive, poor in nutrients and difficult to digest. Soak your oatmeal (preferably organic) overnight to reduce the nasty anti-nutrients (see grain – friend or foe article) and add plain yoghurt/ mixed nuts/dried coconut.

Eggs – they are a low cost alternative to meat. ‘They are rich in just about every nutrient we have yet discovered’ (Nourishing Traditions). Quality does make a difference, so choose free range (even better organic).

Basic brown rice is delicious, economical and the highest of all grains in B vitamins. It also contains iron, vitamin E and some protein. Soak as with all grains overnight. Another great alternative is wild rice which is not considered a grain but a seed of a native American plant. It is high in protein, B vitamins and minerals. Both are low in good fats so remember to eat with butter to reduce the glycemic index (rate at which blood insulin levels rise).

Always cook extra with leftovers in mind. My dinner leftovers usually turn up for lunch.

Walk more – park the car further away, carry the shopping the little bit extra and don’t forget to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Anky buffalo grain dressage saddle?

I just got a new horse about a month ago. I traded her for a gelding who was a narrow to medium narrow tree and she needs a wide or an extra wide so the saddle I had for him didn't even come close to fitting her. I am currently searching for a saddle that I like, she likes, and that is affordable. I sat in a Pessoa Anky Competitor (?) that had the buffalo grain leather and I loved it. My leg felt more relaxed in that saddle that even in the County saddles I usually ride in. I have never ridden in a Pessoa and don't know much about them at all. Does anybody have this saddle or another pessoa? What is the quality like, how long have you had it, and how is it holding up? Anything else you want to add, please do. I could see that the quality is not as good as a County, but County saddles are known for their superb quality. Thanks!

I have an Anky (also with the buffalo leather) and LOVE it. The leather is fantastic: nice and supple, and cleans easily. The big knee blocks are probably my favorite part; it keeps your leg nice and secure and very correct. The seat is great- deep and balanced. The fit is great to- fits my horse very well and also pretty much all the others I've put it on. Anyways, I highly recommend this saddle.
