Hanna Barbera's Pic-A-Nic Basket Cartoon Classics
Sale Price: $134.85

Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, one of entertainment's most unforgettable duos, go together like peanut butter and jelly, Laverne and Shirley, and Laurel and Hardy. Having made a name for themselves with MGM's Tom and Jerry, the Hanna-Barbera team made history when they ushered Ruff and Reddy, the first made-for-television cartoon, into America's consciousness in late 1957. By 1960, The Flintstones were prime-time entertainment for the whole family, and as with its Hanna-Barbera brethren, the show's musical score not only nudged the laughs, but ingratiated itself into the very fabric of contemporary American life. Inventive, lively, and utterly recognizable, the remastered Hanna-Barbera Pic-A-Nic Basket box set is the mother lode of cartoon music. Handsomely packaged, with a faux basket handle and all, these four discs ambitiously tackle the massive canon largely assembled by lyricist Hanna and composer Hoyt Curtin. Discs one and two concentrate on the classics from the earliest tunes to a slew of Yogi Bear sounds to Space Ghost's theme and the zany Hong Kong Fooey theme. Disc three, an array of woodwinds, heavy loping tuba, poppin' slap-tongue bass clarinet, and rock- and jazz-inflected drum and guitar, pays tribute to the brilliantly animated Flintstones. Disc four, excellent filler for mix tapes, contains nearly 100 tracks of sound effects, from boings, footsteps, and explosions to bits of goofy dialogue. Bright moments are found in the trumpet-happy Jetsons theme, the groovy Scooby Doo main title, and the swingin' "Car Hop Song" from the Flintstones. These sounds, together with a terrific accompanying booklet, are altogether winning. --Paige La Grone

Goldilocks - Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child [VHS]
|
|
|
In this astonishingly star-studded animated version of the traditional tale, Goldilocks (Raven-Symone of TV's The Cosby Show) is a black girl from a tropical village whose way of life boils down to doing what she wants without thinking of the consequences. She gets her customary comeuppance, of course, but not before she has incriminated her fellow students for something she did and alienated all her friends. As she wanders through the forest playing hooky, she meets a spider (Jenifer Lewis), a snake (Ben Vereen), and a bat (Lou Rawls) who warn her in song, but the musical trio cannot divert her from her fateful encounter with the three bears (Tone Loc, Alfre Woodard, David Alan Grier). This 25-minute production narrated by Robert Guillaume has a Caribbean flavor to its music, background, and references. (When their food is too hot, the bear family takes a minibus to a reggae concert.) This delightful interpretation of the classic is part of HBO's Happily Ever After series. (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Holt Collier: His Life, His Roosevelt Hunts, and the Origin of the Teddy Bear
Sale Price: $280.18
|
|
|
On November 14, 2002, the 100th anniversary of the world famous Teddy Bear will be celebrated. The origin of the Teddy Bear stems from an occasion when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the wilderness of Mississippi in hopes of killing a black bear. He was guided on this hunt by Holt Collier, a former slave, Confederate veteran (yesamazing though it sounds), Texas cowboy, Mississippi lawman, and noted pioneer. He is known to have killed over 3,000 bear in his lifetime, more than Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett combined. Roosevelt, who also hunted with Collier in Louisiana in 1907, called him "the greatest hunter and guide I have ever known." Collier killed many white men, several in Mississippi. One exciting incident in his biography is a detailed description of the gunfight at Washburn's Ferry where Collier out-drew the notorious Louisiana outlaw Travis Elmore Sage. He was prosecuted only oncefor the murder of a Union captain after the Civil Warbut he was acquitted. Collier was famous nationally during his lifetime, but the racial atmosphere in Mississippi for the last eighty years kept his remarkable story from being told. There is no detailed and authoritative work on Holt Collier or the origin of the Teddy Bear other than this book.

Babe Ruth Quotes
Some quotes that The Babe said and what some other people had to say about Babe Ruth.
"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
Babe Ruth
In August 1948, Ruth died of throat cancer and lay in state at Yankee Stadium, the baseball cathedral built on the fruits of his work. Ruth's funeral took place on a day of such heat that pallbearer and former teammate Joe Dugan said, "I'd give a hundred dollars for a beer." The old pitcher Waite Hoyt replied in Ruth's spirit: "So would the Babe."
by Mark Maxon
"I had a better year than he did."
Babe Ruth, when told that President Hoover made less than the $80,000 he was demanding in 1930.
"Hotter 'n hell, ain't it, Prez?"
Babe Ruth, after meeting Calvin Coolidge
This next group of quotes was made by Babe Ruth
"I have only one superstition. I touch all the bases when I hit a home run."
All I can tell them is pick a good one and sock it. I get back to the dugout and they ask me what it was I hit and I tell them "I don't know except it looked good."
"As soon as I got out there I felt a strange relationship with the pitcher's mound. It was as if I'd been born out there. Pitching just felt like the most natural thing in the world. Striking out batters was easy."
"Don't let the fear of striking out hold you back."
"How to hit home runs: I swing as hard as I can, and I try to swing right through the ball… The harder you grip the bat, the more you can swing it through the ball, and the farther the ball will go. I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can."
"I won't be happy until we have every boy in America between the ages of six and sixteen wearing a glove and swinging a bat."
"Every strike brings me closer to the next home run."
The following quotes were made by teammates, a broadcaster and an opponent
"No one hit home runs the way Babe did. They were something special. They were like homing pigeons. The ball would leave the bat, pause briefly, suddenly gain its bearings then take off for the stands."
Lefty Gomez
"To understand him you had to understand this: he wasn't human."
Teammate Joe Dugan
"Every big leaguer and his wife should teach their children to pray, "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, and God bless Babe Ruth."
Waite Hoyt
"He wasn't a baseball player. He was a worldwide celebrity, an international star, the likes of which baseball has never seen since."
Broadcaster Ernie Harwell
"He came up again in the ninth. I was a little mad. I told my catcher, Tommy Padden, he was not good enough to hit my fastball. I came through with a fastball for strike one. I missed with the second. The next pitch I nodded to Tommy. I was going to throw the ball past Mr. Ruth. It was on the outside corner. As he went around third, Ruth gave me the hand sign meaning 'to hell with you.' He was better than me. He was the best that ever lived. That big joker hit it clear out of the park for his third home run of the game. It was the longest homer I'd ever seen in baseball."—Guy Bush of the Pittsburgh Pirates on giving up Ruth's last home run (it was the first to clear the right field grandstand at Forbes Field and some estimated the distance at 600 feet.) Quoted in Bush's "Sporting News" obituary after his death.
