The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series) The Best of Broadway - The American Musical (PBS Series)
Sale Price: $10.65

All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

The Twilight Zone - Season 4 (The Definitive Edition) The Twilight Zone - Season 4 (The Definitive Edition)
Sale Price: $26.50

Despite major changes in personnel and the ill-advised switch to a full-hour format, Twilight Zone (with "The" removed from its title) began its fourth season on a promising note. Written by series veteran Charles Beaumont, the premiere episode "In His Image" maintained the high standards that Rod Serling had established throughout the first three seasons, and the story--about a man (George Grizzard) who builds an exact robot replica of himself, with dire consequences--fit well into the hour-long format that Serling reluctantly went along with. Twilight Zone struggled with its expanded length, resulting in some episodes that lack the consistent punch of earlier half-hour episodes. Exhausted by three seasons of prodigious creativity, Serling and Buck Houghton vacated their roles as producers (with Serling's involvement limited to script feedback, writing nearly half of the season's episodes, and on-screen hosting), and TV veteran Herbert Hirschman became the new show-runner (departing mid-season, he was replaced by Bert Granet), promising not to tinker with the series' proven success. But Twilight Zone was inevitably becoming a shadow of its former self, and the involvement of proven TZ writers like Richard Matheson, Earl Hamner, Jr., and Beaumont could not entirely compensate for Serling's growing detachment. Still, these 18 episodes include some fine examples of enduring quality, such as Matheson's "Death Ship," starring Jack Klugman and Ross Martin in a recurring nightmare scenario, and featuring the same spaceship model used in the 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. Beaumont's "Miniature," starring Robert Duvall, was the only hour-long episode pulled from initial syndication (due to a plagiarism lawsuit that was ultimately dismissed), so its inclusion here (along with color scenes from its eventual syndication) is a welcome treat. Serling lampoons the medium of television with "The Bard" (with an early appearance by Burt Reynolds), and his teleplay for "On Thursday We Leave for Home" is the season's highlight, ranking among Twilight Zone's finest science-fiction episodes. It remained clear, however, that Twilight Zone was past its prime, and when the series was renewed for a fifth season in the spring of 1963, a return to its original half-hour format was a belated step in the right direction. Of course, season 4's overall strengths and weaknesses won't matter to collectors of The Definitive Edition DVD sets, and a wealth of archival bonus features make this a must-have addition to anyone's TZ collection. Image Entertainment and features producer Paul Browstein deserve extra credit for their diligent assembly of supplements that render all previous TZ releases virtually obsolete. Nothing has been overlooked, from the commentary (on "Death Ship") and interview clips by acclaimed TZ expert Mark Scott Zicree to the inclusion of a vintage TZ spoof from Saturday Night Live, radio-show adaptations starring Blair Underwood, Jason Alexander, Lou Diamond Phillips and others, and a vintage Twilight Zone comic book, accessible on computers with Adobe reader installed. There's even a brief Rod Serling blooper taken from a scratchy 16-millimeter print, proving that no stone was left unturned in making this a truly definitive TZ collection. --Jeff Shannon

All 18 hour-long episodes from the fourth season--including "In His Image," "Miniature," "The Incredible World of Horace Ford," "On Thursday We Leave for Home," and "The Bard"--are featured in a six-disc set. 15 1/2 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; audio commentary on selected episodes; interviews; promos; DVD-ROM content; more. **18 episodes on 6 discs. 15 1/2 hrs.**

Dance club

Portland may a bit short on the number of dance clubs by big-city standards, but the ones it does have are lively and present everything from New York to the Greek Islands to 70s America.

Modern martini-type bars are commonplace here. The most well liked part of town is the Pearl Distrrict expediently located about a block from one another.

The town's most recent hot/hip hangout is BlueHour located roughly at 13th and Burnside in the Pearl District's Weidon & Kennedy building, it's where Portland's attractive people go to spend their cash. The classy restaurant/bar is not cheap - dinner and drinks can easily set one back a C note - but neither is the crowd.

Along the same lines is Oba ( 12th and Hoyt ). Best for Fri. discount hour, it continues well into the evening. Oba is classy with a twist of casual. Dimly lit with coloured lights, it has a upper 20s-30s professional crowd who are just dyin' to meet ya. A bonus is that the bartenders remember each patron's fave drink.

Evening mixing runs high at unclean, and not just behind the bar.

The bar hopping starts round nine, when the bunch departs Oba and turns the corner to 3rd and couch. Dirty features good music and a super-friendly crowd. Like Candy, Dirty is an upscale people-meeting bar.

A fourth area option is Touche ( 15h and Gleason ). Stylish and casual, the upstairs bar is good in the week or weekends for playing pool or simply hanging out.

For high-end drinking, Huber's ( third and sheer ). Is unparalleled. A favorite haunt of Blazers' players, it serves a flaming Spanish coffee poured right at your table ; please don't spill! These keep the well-dressed crowd happy well into the night. Huber's is the oldest, most classy bar in Portland. The owner works the door and the waiters are in tuxedos. If you want to affect someone, go to Huber's. ( Psst : for those having dinner, the roasted turkey is legendary. )

When it's time to dance, Portland offers a fascinating mixture of clubs.

Cobolt, across Burnside on 3rd Street, is an alternative dance club that is's always packed. Earlier, it is a cool place to hang because it's got a bunch of board games. The 1201 in the Pearl District is a tiny but hip dance club.

The Crystal dancehall ( 13th and Broadway ) is a causal dance club featuring some of Portland's hottest bands. Bar 71, across from Kells pub,has an outside dance floor that is preferred for strippers on their off nights. Since everyone in Portland know this, Bar 71 draws a good deal of men but it has no lack of ladies, either.

Portland's leading edge club is the Lotus cafeteria ( below photograph ). It is simple to like a place where one can get a slice of pie before paying the doorman the modest $5 cover charge. Within, the Lotus cafe is similar to a hip London club without all of the fanfare. The gang is a mix of everything - casually-dressed executives, wildly-dressed punkers, you want it. Lotus is wild, funny, off-beat and laid-back, all at the same time.

The scene changes according to one's location in the club. The long bar, bracketed by a tables and a diner-style counter, is great for having a drink and chatting with mates. Enter the Card Room , however , and it transforms into a dance club that's's part Euro and part NY with a touch of Vegas. A laser-light show creates an active dance scene, a glitter-covered girl grooves on top of the bar and masculine and feminine dancers in all white move wildly in a second-story cage lit by black lights ( right ).

Berbat's Pan - not to be confused with Berbat's bar and restaurant spotted in our'pubs' section - has good food, great drinks, is overwhelming sometimes and sucks other times. The gang is modern young.

On Thursdays, almost all of Portland's clubbers divert themselves to Fernando's Hideaway ( concealed away on initial Street at the Hawthorne Bridge ). It's a two-level, upscale club with a large, open bar on the first floor and a high-energy dance floor up the steps. By ten p.m, there appear to more people waiting in a queue than there are within. To avoid this, arrive by 9:30.

About the Author

Author Bio

Has anybody see the "strangers" movie. I have some questions?

1) Why is it that the couple were targeted? Was it because the hero (James Hoyt) does not invite the lady (killer) in when she first knocks the door?

(Any answer apart from the answer they are psychopaths and did not have any real intention would be most welcome)

2) Does the movie show, the lady Liv Taylor to be dead or alive in the end?

1) They were targeted because They Were Home.
Why Us..?
Because you were home.

The girl knocking on the door just added to the terror.

2) Yeah, she came to screaming. She's alive.
