More than 70 years ago, before the creation of the Department of Conservation, there were less than 400 deer in Missouri. Today, through proper management, that number is about 700,000. That's ideal, considering Missouri's habitat. In some urban "hotspots" though, deer are exceeding the tolerance of the people and the land. They're eating urban crops and expensive landscaping, as well as creating safety hazards for urban motorists. Nobody is suggesting that we eliminate the urban whitetail, but they do need to be managed. The question is how? This video explores some of the issues involved.
