Alaska Facts

Land area: Alaska encompasses 586,412 square miles, which is about 365,000,000 acres, Alaska is the largest state in the union and; one-fifth the size of the lower 48 states.

Largest Parks: Alaska's unique beauty and vast wilderness areas are among its greatest treasures. More than half the nation's parklands are found here, located in every geographic area of the state.

Diameter: East to west, 2,400 miles; north to south, 1,420 miles.

Coastline: 6,640 miles, point to point; as measured on the most detailed maps available, including islands, Alaska has 33,904 miles of shoreline. Estimated tidal shoreline, including islands, inlets and shoreline to head of tidewater, is 47,300 miles.

Adjacent salt water: North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, Arctic Ocean.

Tallest mountain: Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet, is the tallest mountain in North America. Alaska has 39 mountain ranges.

MOUNTAINS

Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska. Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America, is 20,320 ft. above sea level. Denali, the Indian name for the peak, means "The Great One."

Alaska has an estimated 100,000 glaciers, ranging from tiny cirque glaciers to huge valley glaciers. There are more active glaciers and ice fields in Alaska than in the rest of the inhabited world.

To fish king salmon, you'll need a special stamp which is $10 per day, $20 for three days, $30 for a week and $50 for two weeks. Most fishing lodges and guide companies can arrange for your license ahead of time.

Hot Fishing Spots in Alaska

While Alaska has an abundant fish supply and some incredible fishing locations, it can often be about your timing and knowing where the fish will be. That's why a guide or tour can really help your fishing trip be a success. However, the best spots for fishing in Alaska are Kodiak Island, the Kenai River and the Copper River Delta and Bristol Bay.

Kodiak Island is known for its abundance of salmon and great roadside and float fishing. The Kenai River has massive king salmon, but they're fast and strong, making them hard to catch for a beginner fisher and not the best for float fishing.

The Copper River Delta is rich in fish, but fast, meaning it's not recommended for beginners nor really ideal for relaxed float fishing. The Kenai River has the world's biggest king salmon, but the fish are fast and powerful and the trout are minimal. Meanwhile, Kodiak Island is crammed with spawning salmon, but along with very well-fed bears.

Looking for a community that is not to big, has good job opportunities and very kid friendly, and offers a good school system with good programs for kids with special needs. with low housing costs preferrably on or near the ocean. Currently in beautiful Kodiak Alaska but think it may be time to make a change.
