Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Original Broadway Cast)
Sale Price: $8.95
|
|
|
Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 video set Basic, instructional, 8 min workout , advanced 4 vhs in all
Billed as the "future of fitness" and hawked by numerous celebrities, Billy Blanks's Tae-Bo actually deserves much of the hype it's receiving. A mixture of boxing punches and martial arts kicks, Tae-Bo is fun and easy. One of the best elements of this two-tape set is that the first tape (which is 40 minutes long), Tae-Bo: Instructional, lays out the movements you need to successfully complete a workout. Once you've mastered the steps, you won't have to fast-forward through half the tape to get to the workout, nor will your workout be slowed down by the repeated lessons. After you feel comfortable with the movements (and they're really quite easy to follow; nothing too complicated to trip you up), you're ready to move on to Tae-Bo: Basics, a 27-minute workout (5 minutes of warm-up, 18 minutes of Tae-Bo, and 4 minutes of cool-down) that will have your heart pounding and your body sweating. The only downside to this tape is the less-than-exciting music. Blanks, a seven-time World Martial Arts champion, is a superb instructor, providing encouragement and careful instruction (if you don't know by the end of the tape to hold in your stomach, that's no one's fault but your own). Not only is Tae-Bo great exercise for all levels, but the punches and kicks are wonderful for working out stress and aggression. This is the aerobics exercise video for people who are bored by aerobics. --Jenny Brown

Next comes Advanced, a 57-minute workout that will have your heart racing, pulse pounding, and sweat glands working overtime. There's razzmatazz on the moves, with slightly more complicated combinations that should be fairly easy to master if you've completed the first two tapes. This video seriously raises the bar on the difficulty factor. In addition to the short warm-up, the cool-down, and the 30 minutes of Tae-Bo, Advanced Tae-Bo also includes 18 minutes of muscle-crunching floor work. You know you're in trouble when even the guys in the tape have trouble keeping up. Make sure you have truly mastered the first two tapes before attempting this one. The 8-Minute Workout is a highly compacted workout (actually 14 minutes long when you include warm-up and cool-down) for those days when you're too short on time for Basic or Advanced. While the 8-minute idea is compelling, it's not an adequate substitute for the longer workouts. Blanks, a seven-time World Martial Arts champion, is a superb instructor, providing encouragement and careful instruction (if you don't know by the end of the tape to hold in your stomach, that's no one's fault but your own). The only downside to these tapes is the less-than-exciting music. Not only is Tae-Bo great exercise for all levels, but the punches and kicks are wonderful for working out stress and aggression. Great for any nighttime event - prom, holidays, parties, nightlife, concerts, raves, festivals, weddings, and more! The ideal accessory for New Years Eve, Mardi Gras, St Patrick's Day, Burning Man, etc.! Glowbys are illuminated thin fiberoptic strands which clip to your hair to create many brilliant stars of light (50-60 fibers per Glowby, with the longest fibers 14" long). A small barrette (1.3" x 0.6") houses two small batteries (BATTERIES INCLUDED) and a light source, which lights up the ends of the fibers. GLOWBYS ARE REUSABLE - you can wear them again and again. Just change the batteries when Glowbys become too dim, typically 8 hours. Slide lid slightly open to turn on/off. Wearing Glowbys - Wear the thin barrette under the hair so that only the lights are visible. Attach underneath the top layer of hair. The barrette will be covered, but the Glowbys lights will still be visible. Glowbys are 15" long, but can be cut to any length - a star of light appears wherever the fibers are cut. Glowbys come in a cascade cut pattern, but they can be arranged in almost any pattern depending on the your hair style - use your imagination! Hair Stylists - just attach Glowbys and treat the fibers like strands of hair - cut, loop, etc. Caution: Do NOT use a curling iron or hair dryer on Glowbys; HIGH heat will melt the optical fibers. Note that some of the pictures show girls wearing multiple Glowbys. In particular, the girl with pigtails in the first picture is actually wearing 4 Glowbys - 2 blue and 2 white on either side.

More Info On Long Bow:

A longbow is an extended type of a bow which is taller than the average height of a man. Longbows have been present since the Mesolithic times in Europe and Africa. Self bows are ancient longbows, created from a single piece of wood. It was so advanced; it was the weapon of mass destruction during that era. If you would like to build your own longbow, here are a few tips to get you started:
Materials
a. Sapling Branch
b. Sand Paper
c. Strings
d. Sticks
e. Knife
f. Can of polyurethane Wood Finish
g. Band-saw
h. Wooden bow blank
6 easy steps in making a longbow
1. A design should be created before anything else. Research with different sizes of longbows can generate ideas and answers about the style or design that will be best for you. An excellent bow ought to be sturdy and flexible. A 6 foot long branch is recommended. Once you find one, test to see if when bended if it can leap back into its shape. See also if it can handle a large amount of pressure.
2. Chop a nock near the end of the tree/sapling. A nock is a small opening that grasps the bowstring in position. Bind a string to the nock at the end of the bow. Bend it, and then bind the free end of the string to the other side. The string should be stretched and the sapling must be in a shape of a bow. Make sure to cut off any extra string.
3. Locate a few straight sticks that can be used as an arrow. They should be about 3 feet long and the sticks should be as straight as possible. Make sure to cut off any bulges, or knobs. Use a knife to carve the head of each arrow and make sure that it will have a point like the end of a pencil.
4. Give more speed to your arrows by putting them in a fire. Place the point of the arrow in the blaze until it turns black. Do not let it burn thorough. The charring solidifies the point. Slice a notch at the opposite end as it will be the slit that goes against the bowstring when shooting.
5. Check your bow for final touches: slowly draw the bow back inch by inch until you are very sure that the bow is all stretched. You may discover spots that are uneven. If this is the case, eliminate them with a piece of sand paper until it becomes as even as possible.
6. Once the bow has been created, apply a layer of polyurethane using a paint brush. Let it dry for eight hours. Repeat three more times. Optionally, you can decorate the bow by adding colors or a design.
Try out different techniques for shooting; discover tapering techniques through widths and heights. You might want to teach your friends how to create a longbow. It may take a long time to make, but it does not take a lot of skill or money to create a lovely one-piece longbow.

Hunting Crossbow: Is the Horizontal Bow Best?
There are two categores of archery equipment, horizontal and vertical bows. A crossbow is referred to as a horizontal bow since the bow string runs horizontally. Vertical bows include compound bows, recurve, traditional and long bows. If you are in the market for a new piece of bow hunting equipment and are thinking about a crossbow, here are a few things to consider.
1. With a hunting crossbow, the bow is cocked and held in the ready position. This gives the hunter the ability to use the bow more effectively. Because the crossbow is doing a lot more of the work for the hunter, you can spend your time focusing on the target and being ready to shoot. With a horizontal bow you would have to hold the bow drawn, held steady and aimed at the target; thus, requiring a lot more energy from the hunter.
2. A crossbow is especially good for someone who doesn’t have the time to devote to practicing. Because a vertical bow requires more energy and effort by the hunter, it also requires more practice. There is a higher probability of missing your target and practice is crucial in making sure that your skills are fresh and are ready for the new season. Every hunter should get out and practice before heading out on the first hunt of the season. However, a hunter using a crossbow can get away with fewer trips to the target range.
3. A vertical bow, including a compound bow, offers the benefit of a shorter cycle time. While hunting crossbows have the benefit of requiring less time and energy from a hunter, a longer cycle time is one of its drawbacks. This means that you will typically only get one shot off when hunting. By the time you would re-cock the crossbow and get the arrow loaded, the deer would be long gone. With a horizontal bow you have a chance of getting a second shot off.
4. A crossbow is typically fairly heavy and because of the horizontal design it is not a great fit for the hunter who wants to stalk his prey. A crossbow is better suited for a hunter who is going to use a tree stand or a ground blind.
Vertical and horizontal bows are both viable options for a hunter and which one you choose is really just personal preference. If you opt for the hunting crossbow, you are sure to enjoy the power and efficiency that this piece of equipment provides.

Paterson: Media Painted Us As 'Cartoon Characters'
Ending weeks of rumors and speculation, Gov. David Paterson announced Friday he will not run for a full term. Watching Paterson bow out of an election he clearly could not have won came with a sense of déjà vu. The scene was so similar to when his predecessor, Eliot Spitzer, resigned. It was the same room, with the same podium, the same flags … and even the stalwart wife standing by his side ...
