Thankfully, this revival of Jim Henson's beloved characters gets the formula delightfully right, providing a googly-eyed nostalgia trip for adults while also retaining the original's sense of bright (and mildly subversive) wonder. All that's missing is a cameo from Shields and Yarnell, really. Kicking off with a boffo musical number, the story follows Walter (voice of Peter Linz), a small-town boy with a uniquely personal affection for the long-retired Muppets. (OK, he's made of felt.) Teaming up with his brother (Jason Segel, who also co-scripted) and the local schoolteacher (Amy Adams), they attempt to get Kermit, Fozzie, and the gang back together in order to save their studio from an evil oil baron (Chris Cooper, going all in). Director James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) does a marvelous job of updating and honoring his material, weaving sly references to days gone by (the contents of Kermit's rolodex are a particular delight) into the mix of songs, celebrity cameos, and barn-broad puns that gave the original show its bubbly kick. (Fans of Animal and the Chickens will not go home disappointed.) Even the moments that don't quite work land with a cornball brio that feels wholly of a piece with Henson's universe. The result is a true family movie that still brings on the blissful, uncomplicated grins days after viewing. The highest-grossing Chinese film as of May 2012, Jiang Wen's Let the Bullets Fly (2010) is a fast-paced, frequently funny action-comedy enlivened by Jiang's go-for-broke direction and a thoroughly game cast that includes Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat. In addition to writing and directing the period film, Jiang also stars as Zhang, a bandit chief who overtakes a train carrying Ma (Ge You), the incoming mayor of a walled city called Goose Town. To avoid certain death, Ma assumes the identity of his adviser, who was killed during the train takeover, and makes Zhang the new mayor of Goose Town. The bandit's rule is initially opposed by mobster Huang (Chow), who holds the real seat of power in the town through ruthless oppression of the locals. Though a bandit, Zhang is opposed to exploiting the poor, and teams with Ma to unseat Huang through a series of increasingly complicated schemes, many of which hinge on assumed identities, impersonations, and body doubles. This theme of judging a book by its cover runs throughout Let the Bullets Fly, as all the characters, including a local prostitute (Zhou Yun) and Zhang's henchmen, all identified by numbers, surpass expectations of their respective positions through their actions: Zhang is a bandit, but also a decidedly democratic leader, while incumbent mayor Ma proves a craftier deceiver than his outlaw partner. The comedy of reversed (and inversed) personalities offers subtle contrast to Jiang's kinetic action set pieces, which career from explosive train derailments to wire-work fights and sprawling shootouts; the balance between action and comedy, the latter driven largely by the performances by the three leads, is handled with a deftness that should serve as a study guide for American filmmakers (or whoever remakes the picture, as it's already been optioned for an English-language remake) attempting the same blend. The delightful Kristen Wiig, who's shone in dozens of supporting roles and on Saturday Night Live, hits a bull's-eye with her first lead role in Bridesmaids. Annie (Wiig) isn't doing so well; her bakery failed and she keeps sleeping with a good-looking louse (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), but she's always had her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph, Away We Go) to buoy her up… until Lillian gets engaged. Annie becomes maid of honor, but another friend of Lillian's--the rich and lovely Helen (Rose Byrne, Get Him to the Greek)--wants to take over that position. Misadventures with bad Brazilian food, dress fittings, an unfortunate flight to Vegas, and a sympathetic traffic cop (Chris O'Dowd from British TV comedy The IT Crowd) follow, with increasingly hilarious results. Bridesmaids successfully balances raunchy comedy and character portrait. The embarrassing and socially catastrophic stuff, which in too many movies balloons into absurdity, is here kept in check just enough to allow Annie and the other characters to be multidimensional people--without the movie losing its comic capacity for cringe. (Actress Melissa McCarthy, of Mike & Molly, works miracles with a character than in most hands would be pure cartoon.) No Remorse, the sixth entry in the made-for-TV series of Jesse Stone mysteries featuring Robert B. Parker's small-town police chief, is another satisfying blend of detective thrills and character drama, anchored by coproducer-cowriter Tom Selleck's typically fine turn as Stone. Picking up shortly after the events of the previous Stone film, Thin Ice, the action finds Stone struggling with suspension from the force and his alcohol issues; intervention from old friend Commander Healy (Stephen McHattie) gets him back on his feet and on the trail of a serial killer preying on young men. Stone and his deputies (Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth) uncover a trail that leads them to Boston mob boss Gino Fish (William Sadler), whose secret past may uncover the guilty party. Meanwhile, Stone has to deal with a rash of convenience store robberies that have turned deadly, as well as his ex-wife and relationship issues with his new dog, Reggie. Though the tone is a bit darker than previous Stone features, and the resolution of the convenience store subplot somewhat rushed, the performances, led by Selleck and abetted by an all-pro supporting cast (which includes William Devane as Stone's shrink and Saul Rubinek as the hapless Hasty Hathaway), are engaging, and the direction by Robert Harmon top-notch. Sadly, No Remorse was the last Jesse Stone film to see production during Parker's lifetime, but under Selleck's stewardship, fans can rest assured that Jesse Stone will continue in good hands.
