Do green/blue screens have to be an exact shade of the color, or can it be slightly off?

I don't know if I can just use normal fabric material of blue for a blue screen or if i have to buy the real thing. It seems like it wouldn't matter if the color is exactly a certain shade because blue screens don't mess up with shadows, which is actually making the screen a darker shade of the color.

I believe the whole point of using a green screen is to have a color that wouldn't be found anywhere else in the image so that the background can be selected very simply. So no, I wouldn't think the exact shade would matter.

Besides, how the camera records that shade is going to depend on lighting anyway.
