1984 was a successful record not only because it contained solid, catchy hard rock, but also because it incorporated synthesizers into the mix, the first metal album to do so to any serious extent. Although the advances in electronic music make this material sound dated now, it's still a highlight of Van Halen's career. Songs like "Jump" contain a pop element that gave 1984 mainstream appeal, and David Lee Roth turned the frontman role into an art form on songs such as "Panama," "Hot for Teacher," "Drop Dead Legs," and "I'll Wait." To a large extent, it was 1984 that set the standard for '80s pop metal, and David Lee Roth who set the standard (or takes the blame, depending on your point of view) for the aggressively good-time attitude most pop-metal bands took for their own. --Genevieve Williams

Jack Corcoran (Bill Murray) is a mildly successful motivational speaker on the lower end of the trade-show circuit. At his engagement party, he finds out his long-believed-dead dad has only recently died, leaving him a large inheritance. Of course, Jack doesn't know how large until he meets a suspicious lawyer (Harve Presnel) who unloads Dad's prized possession: a four-ton circus elephant named Vera (Tai). Larger Than Life is a buddy-road movie. Murray uses his old tricks to bully or con several people into helping him, including a whacked-out truck driver (Matthew McConaughey). In this day and age of digital effects, Murray could be teaming up with Roger Rabbit or some other special effect; his interplay with Tai is quite natural. Director Howard Franklin codirected the underrated Quick Change with Murray, and it's clear they work well together. A curio in Murray's career, this film is effective and fun family entertainment, filled with good-natured ribs, bubble-light dramatics, and a scene-stealing elephant. She's a charmer. --Doug Thomas

Now here's something you don't see everyday, Chauncey. It's the complete first season of one of television's smartest, savviest, and most subversively funny animated series, ranked by TV Guide as one of the top 50 series of all time. Like the animators at Warner Bros.' Termite Terrace (birthplace of Porky, Daffy, and Bugs), producer Jay Ward, his partner Bill Scott (the voice of Bullwinkle), and the cracked writing staff did not write down to children. The dialogue is witty and sharply satiric. Characters break the "fourth wall" between the screen and the audience. They make sly references to the show's creators and the television network. They hurl barbs of mass destruction at Washington, D.C. politicians. And then there are the godawful puns. This four-disc set contains the series' first two serial adventures. "Jet Fuel Formula" is a cold war-era blast, as Rocky (voiced by June Foray, the Queen of Cartoons) and Bullwinkle frantically race to re-create a rocket fuel recipe (actually Grandma Bullwinkle's recipe for mooseberry fudge cake), while being menaced by those no-goodniks Boris Badenov and femme fatale Natasha. "Box Top Robbery" reveals that the basis for the world's economy is not gold and silver, but cereal box tops. Linking these cliffhanging episodes are such hilarious segments as "Fractured Fairy Tales," which upend familiar storybook favorites (Red Riding Hood, for example, is a predatory fur merchant after the unwitting wolf), "Mr. Peabody," the canine genius who travels through time in the company of his boy, Sherman, and forthright Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, who must contend with his own horse for the affections of sweet Nell. Bullwinkle gets extra credits as Mr. Know-It-All and as the host of Poetry Corner. And watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat! These cartoons are as fresh and funny as when they first aired more than four decades ago. The winning and winsome Lifetime Television series Drop Dead Diva takes a great concept and then lets its terrific writers and actors run with it. Drop Dead Diva is based on a body-soul switcheroo that happens when a vapid model, Deb (Brooke D'Orsay), dies in a sudden car accident and comes back--accidentally--in the body of an overweight, overachieving attorney named Jane (the absolutely stellar Brooke Elliott). Elliott makes Deb-in-Jane's body a hilarious contradiction and compelling heroine, with Deb's and Jane's flaws combined into one opinionated, extremely entitled package. Drop Dead Diva is reminiscent of classic "switched" films like All of Me and Freaky Friday, with a little of The Truth About Cats and Dogs mixed in. Yet it is easily sustained as a TV series by the deft writing and excellent acting by Elliott, as well as the ensemble cast that includes Margaret Cho (never better), Jackson Hurst, April Bowlby, and Josh Stamberg. The show's setting in a law office ensures no shortage of great situations for comedy, drama, and pathos, yet the acting, writing, and direction are so light and assured that Drop Dead Diva really blazes its own trail. Elliott is a wonder, managing to capture shallow ("I have never been more than a size 2 and I don't intend to start now," says the newly revived, and horrified, Jane/Deb as her first words after recovering from what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound) and quietly competent. (Happily, Jane retains her brilliant legal mind as well as her body; Deb contributes only her self-involved personality.) Drop Dead Diva easily could veer into preachiness or predictability yet snappily avoids both pitfalls, with sharply drawn and -acted characters that viewers want to follow over the story arcs. And Elliott is a skyrocket of a star, hilarious, heartbreaking, and believable, both as the meek, too-smart-for-her-own-good Jane and the Queen of Everything Deb. No wonder Drop Dead Diva is one of the Lifetime network's biggest breakout successes. The set includes all 13 episodes plus great extras for real fans, including deleted scenes, Ally McBeal-esque "dreamisodes," a making-of feature, and more. Long live the Diva! --A.T.
