Pink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) Pink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Sale Price: $12.30

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon

It Might Get Loud It Might Get Loud
Sale Price: $10.39

Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a style based on texture and a mind-boggling array of effects); and White, whose insistence on authenticity is admirable but perhaps a tad self-conscious, constructs a "guitar" from a plank of wood, a piece of wire, and a Coke bottle (he also plays a recording by the primitive bluesman Son House, featuring just voice and handclaps, that White says is still his biggest inspiration). The three also converge on a Hollywood sound stage, where they chat and a do a little jamming on Zep's "In My Time of Dying" (with all three playing slide guitar) and the Band's "The Weight." It's hard to say if the film's appeal will extend beyond guitar freaks and fans of these particular bands, but at the very least, It Might Get Loud offers some interesting insight into the soul and inspiration behind some of pop's best and most popular music. --Sam Graham

The Sony DVD It Might Get Loud is an epic, exhilarating backstage pass into the world of rock stars. There are guitar players, and then there are rock stars. Over the course of one day, three generations of electric guitar phenoms come together, crank up their amps, and let it roll.Documentarian Davis Guggenheim gives us so much more than an all-star jam session (that alone would make even the gnarliest of rock geeks giddy). He leads us to the artists' inner sanctums and illuminates the paths each one traveled to forge a sound of his own. We begin to understand how a one-time furniture upholsterer from Detroit, a London studio musician, and a Dublin schoolboy redefined the horizons of guitar playing. Meanwhile, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), the Edge (U2), and Jack White (The White Stripes) seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company while sharing riffs, swapping stories, and divulging their distinct philosophies of craft. This soulful DVD is at once a portrait of each artist and also a captivating examination of the creative process. It Might Get Loud does get loud, and in the process, opens up our minds and hearts to a whole new way of listening to and enjoying what it means to rock.

No one uses color like Chinese director Zhang Yimou--movies like Raise the Red Lantern or Hero, though different in tone and subject matter, are drenched in rich, luscious shades of red, blue, yellow, and green. House of Flying Daggers is no exception; if they weren't choreographed with such vigorous imagination, the spectacular action sequences would seem little more than an excuse for vivid hues rippling across the screen. Government officers Leo and Jin (Asian superstars Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro) set out to destroy an underground rebellion called the House of Flying Daggers (named for their weapon of choice, a curved blade that swoops through the air like a boomerang). Their only chance to find the rebels is a blind women named Mei (Ziyi Zhang, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who has some lethal kung fu moves of her own. In the guise of an aspiring rebel, Jin escorts Mei through gorgeous forests and fields that become bloody battlegrounds as soldiers try to kill them both. While arrows and spears of bamboo fly through the air, Mei, Jin, and Leo turn against each other in surprising ways, driven by passion and honor. Zhang's previous action/art film, Hero, sometimes sacrificed momentum for sheer visual beauty; House of Flying Daggers finds a more muscular balance of aesthetic splendor and dazzling swordplay. --Bret Fetzer

BLACK BOOK - Blu-Ray Movie

As in Basic Instinct, a lovely lady takes the lead in Black Book, but this time Paul Verhoeven has more than cheap thrills in mind. Towards the end of WWII, Rachel Stein (the vibrant Carice von Houten), a Jewish singer, is living with a gentile family in the countryside. When Allied forces bomb the area, she's forced to flee. On her perilous journey to The Hague (Verhoeven's hometown), brunette Rachel joins the Resistance and changes her identity to blonde Ellis de Vries. Her next order of business: infiltrate Gestapo headquarters. Like many Verhoeven heroines, Rachel aces her assignment--and then some. First, she seduces the handsome Captain Müntze (Sebastian Koch, The Lives of Others), then she falls in love with him. Müntze, who returns her affection, isn't what he appears to be, but their relationship puts both at great risk. At this point, the filmmaker expertly kicks the proceedings into high gear, before concluding on a bittersweet note. Naturally, since this is a Verhoeven picture, there's plenty of wry humor and uninhibited sexuality along the way. Starting with 1985's Flesh + Blood, the Dutch director released an American movie every two to three years. After the poorly received Hollow Man, however, Verhoeven took a six-year break. Black Book, a return to his native Holland, was worth the wait. (He began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.) It works triple-time as a thriller, a tribute to Holland's Jewish population, and a poison pen letter to the Dutch opportunists who would attempt to sell them out. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Forks Over Knives Forks Over Knives
Sale Price: $12.95

This feature film examines the profound claim that most if not all of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controleed or even reversed by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. Studio: Virgil Films And Entertai Release Date: 08/30/2011 Starring: Joey Aucoin Run time: 96 minutes Rating: Pg

Lee Fulkerson's illuminating documentary serves as a natural successor to Food, Inc. in taking a critical look at the consequences of Western dietary habits. While some might view the lower-budget Forks over Knives as a long-form commercial for veganism, Fulkerson's evidence supporting the benefits of a plant-based diet is too compelling to dismiss (and he never claims that a small piece of cheese ever killed anyone). The filmmaker builds his case around the work of two doctors who grew up on farms where cow's milk was considered "nature's perfect food," as Dr. T. Colin Campbell puts it, and went into different fields of medicine, but their research led them to the same conclusion. For 20 years, Cornell University nutritional biochemist Campbell focused on China, where degenerative disease rates skyrocketed with the increased consumption of meat and dairy. By contrast, Japan and Kenya, where the fare is leaner, have experienced far fewer incidences of such illnesses. As a surgeon, Cleveland Clinic's Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, an Olympic Gold Medalist for rowing, also witnessed the results of a dependence on animal-based and processed foods: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer. When his patients eliminated these items, they experienced significant improvement. Several appear on screen, along with Dr. Neal Barnard, Junshi Chen (collaborator on Campbell's China Study)--even mixed martial artist Mac Danzig. An opening title cautions that the film should not serve as a substitute for medical advice, but it certainly provides helpful information for anyone concerned about their health. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Fireproof Fireproof
Sale Price: $5.49

A feel-good drama, Fireproof has a strong agenda: stay married, lead an honest life, and let your faith in a higher power help guide you. A still boyish-looking Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains) stars as Caleb Holt, a mercurial-tempered firefighter whose marriage is on the rocks. He clearly enjoys his status as a hero, but it comes at the expense of his marriage. His wife Catherine (Erin Bethea) is tired of the distance and wants him to make more of an effort at home, rather than surf porn on the Internet and hoard his earnings toward his dream fishing boat instead of helping out her disabled mother. Faced with impending divorce, Caleb's dad challenges him to follow the "40-day love dare," in which each task (cook her dinner, say nothing negative, etc.) is meant for him to better understand love and commitment and try and win his wife back. The third film by brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, Fireproof is the siblings' most polished feature. Cameron does a fine job of making Caleb real and believable, even when we're not always liking him. Though saddled at times with maudlin lines, Cameron adds emotion and range to his role. There is a not so subtle theme that the Holts--who at the beginning of the film are agnostic--needed religion to save their marriage. Clearly, Fireproof believes in its agenda and was made with the Christian audience in mind. Whether secular audiences will fall under its spell as well is debatable. But no one should walk away from the film offended. --Jae-Ha Kim Stills from Fireproof (click for larger image)

Other Colors

In addition to the placement of certain pieces of furniture and objects in one's home to obtain perfect harmony, According to Chinese philosophy, whether it is a home or business environment, placement of furnishings and objects, where certain rooms are located and the color within the rooms, are all based upon the practice of Feng Shui. The art of Feng Shui is about harmony and balance, about inner and outer peace. Color plays an important role. Each color represents one of Feng Shui's five elements; fire, water, metal, wood or earth. Each color has specific characterizations, which are taken into consideration; as each color affects energy flow in a different way. There are Yin colors, which tend to be lighter, more passive and calming in nature, and Yang colors, which are more vibrant and aggressive. The combination of Yin and Yang in perfect balance is what Feng Shui strives to achieve and maintain. By incorporating Feng Shui into your home and business environment, happiness, harmony, peace and creative energy will flow freely. Assessing color palate and placement of color, when decorating your surroundings, you can more easily attain these important features and Feng Shui benefits in your life.

The color white represents the element of metal. Grays and golds are also representative of the metal element, but white has many helpful properties for one's life. While the Chinese associate the color white to death, the Western World sees it more as new life, purity, innocence, peacefulness and tranquility. Other characteristics of the color white are confidence, focus, intensity and poise. The color white, used in Feng Shui creates a fresh, crisp, clean, uplifting environment.

While there are many shades of white, including those with hues of blue, pink or yellow, pure white, especially in the Western portion of the home supports creative endeavors. Considering using white in kitchens, art studios or writer's dens. The color white in offices can give the feeling of openness to ideas.

Feng Shui practices recommend the use of white specifically in the Western and Northwestern part of the home and should be used in contrast with other colors. When used in the Eastern or southeastern part of the home, it should only be used as an accent color.

White has been known as a healing color in Feng Shui, spreading healing vibrations throughout the area in which it is used. It is a soothing color for the psyche, so use in a bedroom, area where meditation or relaxation occurs is wise. In fact, Feng Shui practice has directed patients with cancer to focus on the color white, as this color inhibits the growth of cells. Another place in the home where white would be appropriate is the bathroom. Relaxation in a tub of warm, sudsy water, with the cleanliness of bathing, combines the sense of tranquility, calmness and and purity that the color white represents in Feng Shui.

The color white is used to provide harmony in love relationships, with children, for people who tend to be caregivers and those who help others, in creativity and travel. White is the perfect color for a child's room, again, representing purity, but also protection, a sense of freedom, thoughts and spirit. A child in the forming years of life can benefit from all of these characters in addition to the sense of creativity that the color white supports.

It is recommended that if you are the type of person who is overly critical or have a difficult time expressing emotion, the color white, in Feng Shui, should be avoided. Too much white in a room can exude a sense of coldness and may provoke anxiety. Again, the most important aspect of Feng Shui is balance. White is a perfect color to blend with many other colors, especially colors with Yang properties, to achieve this sense of harmony, peace and balance in one's decor.

The Impact of Color and Its Different Associations in Multicultural Marketing

An earlier series of a Newsletter included articles on how to culturally customize your website. The first feature article focused on the choice of color and their different meanings in different cultures.

Use This As A Basic Introduction To Color

Find out if there is a strong cultural association with certain colors in your target country.

The best way to verify the right use of colors is to have your website and cross cultural communication materials reviewed by an appropriate person in your target country.

Most of the time you will not need any further help with color associations. When in doubt ask for professional cultural marketing advice.

Source For This Article

This article is largely inspired by the book The Culturally Customized Web Site by Nitish Singh & Arun Pereira, published in 2005, with some of my own personal knowledge and online resources.

I am a little weary as to the value of current associations with some of the colors as referenced in this book. Color associations can lose their power, become out-dated and new cultural associations can be created.

Some of the color associations are not all-encompassing - you can still use these colors in other circumstances without an automatic association. But you should give particular consideration if you refer to a topic directly associated with a color. Look at the associations for yellow in the United States.

This book is the best reference source I have come across on the meanings of colors. I highly recommend reading it if you are interested in customizing your any of your communication to different cultures, online or offline.

Society evolves and so do color associations in most countries. Use this list of color associations as a very broad guideline.

If you are creating a localized website or culturally customized content for a specific country, it is always best to get appropriate professional feedback on your choice of colors.

There is more than the simple choice of colors. Different cultures have different tastes. What works well in one country may have disastrous results in another country - even if the colors are "right".
