Pink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Sale Price: $11.86
|
|
|
By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon
Based on Pink Floyd's hit album, this dazzling rock musical stars Bob Geldof as Pink, a rock star tortured by his past and descending into madness. His breakdown is represented by striking live-action and animated sequences and such Floyd songs as "Another Brick in the Wall," "Comfortably Numb," "Goodbye Blue Sky," "The Trial" and others. With Bob Hoskins, Christine Hargreaves; Alan Parker directs. 83 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; documentary; photo gallery; theatrical trailer; movie poster.

It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, when it was released, some of the music in oh-so-'80s synths sounds a bit dated. Yet this two-CD set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, "If I Was Your Girlfriend," and the thunderous "The Cross," Prince proves why the hype was justified. --Amy Linden

Alice Upside Down
Sale Price: $2.57

Finally, a film that explores the challenges and insecurities facing middle school girls minus an overabundance of attitude. Alice Upside Down, based on the book The Agony of Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, is the story of Alice (Alyson Stoner), an insecure 6th grader who's mother died several years ago who's just moved to a new town where she'll be entering middle school. A magnet for embarrassing moments, Alice's first meetings with her neighbor Elizabeth (Parker McKenna Posey) and soon-to-be-classmate Patrick (Dylan McLaughlin) are hardly omens of a smooth introduction to middle school. Worse yet, the first day of school finds Alice enrolled in nightmare teacher Mrs. Plotkin's (Penny Marshall) homeroom class, at odds with the school principal, and saddled with a derogatory nickname that threatens to stick. Like many adolescents, Alice deals with her self-doubt by fantasizing about encounters in which she's confident and popular and by shutting out her father Ben (Luke Perry) and her older brother Lester (Lucas Grabeel). As Alice struggles to find her place in middle school, she matures both emotionally and socially and her relationships with her family, friends, and teacher Mrs. Plotkin begin to change and grow in positive ways. What's so refreshing about Alice Upside Down is that the film truly captures the insecurities of being an 11-year-old about to enter middle school without the abundance of teen attitude so popular in contemporary films. Alice is the adolescent every parent hopes for--she's a real, likeable kid who's changing and maturing into a strong young woman. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi Stills from Alice Upside Down (Click for larger image) Beyond Alice Upside Down The book that started it all The newest book in the Alice series More from Anchor Bay
Change to: Still mourning the death of her mother a few years back, Alice McKinley finds her life seriously disrupted when her father Ben buys a store and moves her and her older brother Lester to a new town. In the painful throes of adolescence, Alice has a rough time adjusting to her new school, especially after she gets the stern Mrs. Plotkin as her core teacher. Feeling shy and isolated, Alice frequently escapes into a vivid fantasy life that occasionally gets her into hot water. But with a little unexpected help from Mrs. Plotkin, Alice learns not to judge by appearances or jump to conclusions. More importantly, she confronts her father over his inability to accept their loss and move on into the future.

This female-bonding film takes your basic soap opera and twists it inside out. Although director Herbert Ross draws superb performances from his actresses, he occasionally wallows in that maudlin, Hollywood melodrama in which close-ups are crucial. Remember, this is the man who directed Steel Magnolias. However, Ross also does something you don't expect: he makes you fall in love with his characters. Whoopi Goldberg is a down-on-her luck singer who hopes to start over in Los Angeles. Mary-Louise Parker is the realtor whose life is going nowhere. After Goldberg answers Parker's ad in the paper for a companion to drive to LA, these two completely different women grudgingly find themselves emotionally involved. Drew Barrymore enters the picture on the first leg of the trip when Goldberg insists on visiting her. After battling with her drug-dealing boyfriend, the flighty, sexy Barrymore throws in with them. During their trek west, the women learn to take life as it lands on them while recognizing true friendship. The film is enlightened in that it accepts the complications and blurred family ties of the '90s. At the heart of the story is the realization that people can expand past expected boundaries. The movie gels in other areas as well. The all-female soundtrack is powerful and works to underscore, not overpower, certain scenes. The same can be said of the supporting cast, specifically Anita Gillette and James Remar. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Spider-Man 2 (Widescreen Special Edition)

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) gives up his crime-fighting identity of Spider-Man in a desperate attempt to return to ordinary life and keep the love of MJ (Kirsten Dunst). But a ruthless, terrifying new villain, the multi-tentacled Doc Ock, forces Peter to swing back into action to save everything he holds dear.Product Measures: 0.5 x 5.5 x 7.5
More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honoring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 3. --Jeff Shannon DVD Features: The first commentary track is by director Sam Raimi and a self-deprecating Tobey Maguire speaking in tandem, and producer (and Marvel CEO) Avi Arad and coproducer Grant Curtis speaking in tandem. They discuss a number of topics, including Raimi's memory of his excitement over Richard Donner's Superman and how the character of Black Cat had to be dropped from the film. The second commentary is by six members of the Oscar-nominated effects team, and one of their primary focuses is how Doc Ock's arms were achieved by a combination of puppetry and CGI. The centerpiece of the second disc is a massive two-hour documentary that can be viewed all at once or in 12 separate pieces. It covers the development of the story, the visual effects, costumes, stunts, and sound and music. Three shorter featurettes cover Peter Parker's struggle between his personal and hero lives, Doc Ock, and the women in Spider-Man's life, and what's interesting is how they discuss those topics not just in relation to the movies but to the comic books as well. (For example, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy had a much greater impact in the comics.) There's a scene in which you can toggle among three different camera angles, and a gallery of 17 paintings Alex Ross created for the opening sequence. The sound and picture are spectacular, though only the Superbit edition has DTS. --David Horiuchi More Spiderman on DVD The Spiderman Toy Store The First Film Spider Man on the small screen The Soundtrack Game Boy Advance The Book More Superheroes on DVD BatmanBladeThe Hulk Jimmy NeutronJustice LeagueKim Possible RobocopSpider-ManSuperman Wonder WomanX-MenAlso see our Action & Adventure Store Stills from Spider-Man 2 (click for larger image)

Craig Hamilton Parker the Psychic Medium
Craig Hamilton Parker and his wife Jane are naturally gifted in psychic mediumship, clairvoyance, prediction and telepathy, and their powers continue to astound non-believers, as well as a number of disbelieving experts, which have included professional psychologists. Their remarkable powers, as well as their undeniable screen presence and engaging written style, have earned them a well-deserved reputation as some of the most visible psychics in the world today.
Craig and Jane first shot to fame in the UK on Channel Four’s The Big Breakfast, which saw them predict news items for the week ahead. On the show, they worked alongside Chris Evans and Paula Yates, and their predictions made them very popular with the viewers.
Since then, Craig and Jane Hamilton Parker have worked internationally as TV psychics, appearing on programmes for the BBC and the Discovery Channel, as well as TV stations in France, Australia and South Korea. One of their most infamous TV appearances was on a programme called The Spirit of Diana, which was a television s?ce that saw the pair successfully contact the spirit of Princess Diana. This programme was considered rather controversial in the UK, although it was widely acclaimed throughout the world and achieved a worldwide audience of around 30 million people. The pair were also the subject of an Everyman documentary, which was broadcast on BBC 2, and they were regularly featured on specialist digital channel, Psychic TV.
Craig and Jane’s extensive TV work demonstrates their natural psychic gifts, as well as their ability to impress even the most sceptical of audiences. It also proves that their psychic talent is undiminished by working in difficult or distracting conditions such as inside a television studio, or in an outside location.
When contacting the spirit world, the couple are disciplined and dedicated to spiritual values, unlike many other TV psychics who often take a much more sensationalist approach. Because of this, any clients seeking spiritual guidance or help from the pair cannot fail to be pleased with the results.
As well as being a popular TV personality, Craig Hamilton Parker is also a bestselling author who has penned a variety of books on subjects such as psychic mediumship, intuition and dreams. Who agrees that Frank Lampard should be dropped from the England side?
Judging by his performance at the last World Cup and the last four or five England internationals, who agrees that Frank Lampard, while undoubtedly a world class player, should be dropped from the England side? In my opinion, he Isn't doing the business, he's under-performing and just doesn't look international class. Maybe a break would do him good.
But who to take his place, I hear you cry! What about Phil Neville? Okay, not a recognised midfielder, but doing a hell of a job for Everton. Or maybe Scot Parker, again doing a great job for his club. Frank Lampard is keeping his place in the team because of his reputation and who he is rather than performances on the pitch - in my humble opinion, anyway. If someone Isn't performing, they should be dropped - no matter who they are, or who they play for. And let's face it, Frank Lampard Isn't performing - not to the standard of an England international, anyway. Discuss...!!!
I agree that Frank Lampard should be dropped from the team. When on his game, he is a fantastic player, however, I feel that our world cup chances would have been dramatically increased had Sven the balls to drop both Lampard and Beckham who were clearly suffering from loss of form and fitness.
Steve McLaren (with the backing of the press) had the sense to get rid of the walking circus David Beckham, however, a true show of his strength will be how long he tolerates the dip in form of Lampard, and Rooney for that matter. We have plenty of options in the middle of the park, and Lampard out would enable Gerrard to get back to the middle with Carrick/Hargreaves holding for him, enabling him to get forward. it would also mean that Lennon/Wright-Phillips/Walcott would get a run out and give the team a new injection of pace.
As a side issue, I also don't know how long McLaren intends to suffer it out with his little golden boy Downing. Clearly some favouritism for the boy from our new England manager, but the sooner Joe Cole comes back from injury the better.
