Did Remington change the Model 700 trigger?

I just bought a brand new 700, and I had been concerned over all the complaints people have about its notorious lawyer trigger. I heard it was 8 lbs, and creepier than a clown at a funeral home. Well, I just got mine, and it's a light, cleanly breaking trigger that is even better than my K31 (which defines trigger perfection). What gives?

Did Remington finally forget about lawsuits and decide to give the people what they want, or did I just get lucky?

For bragging rights, it's a Lefthanded CDL in 7mm Rem Mag. It is the most beautifully shaped rifle in my collection, by far (the rest are milsurps, so of course).

Your CDL is probably equipped with Remington’s "new" X Mark Pro trigger system.

The old Remington trigger was quite bad out of the box. Fortunately, it was relatively easy to adjust provided you knew what you were doing. I've adjusted dozens of these triggers and I really admire their design. A while back, a fellow sent me a brand new Remington VLS complaing that the out of the box trigger pull was to heavy. I dry fired the rifle and was pleasantly surprised. This gun had the "new" X mark trigger. The trigger broke cleanly and a quick check on the scale revealed a pull weight of four pounds. This was still a little heavy for his rifle, a heavy barrel job in the new 17 fireball, but I had to do was turn the weight down. Creep and over travel were apparently a thing of the past!

This trigger’s design appears to be VERY similar to the old one. There are a few minor differences. The X-Mark uses Allen screws instead of slotted ones. The creep / over travel screws on the X-Mark are staked in place with some sort of thread locker. The pull weight is still adjustable. The factory setting of about four pounds is just about right for a hunting rifle. Target and varmint shooters may desire a lighter pull.

I think that once Remington realized how much market share they were loosing to innovations like Savage’s accu-trigger and CZ’s beautiful single set trigger, they decided it was time to do something. That something basically amounted to performing decent in-house trigger jobs on new 700’s, then staking certain adjustment screws in place so that foolish consumer gun cranks wouldn’t get shot in the foot after attempting to do the job themselves. The end result is that 700’s now come with a good trigger right out of the box. It only took them like 30 or 40 years to solve their trigger problem. Way to go Remington!
