The River

Despite the acclaim accorded Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, this is the album that broke Springsteen into the big leagues, thanks to "Hungry Heart," then his most pointedly commercial song; it had new fans swooning but some old ones grumbling for the "poetic" Springsteen of days gone by. Not to worry--though more economical lyrically, The River had something to offer nearly everyone: There's old-time frat rock ("Sherry Darling"), empathetic character studies ("The River," "Stolen Car," "Independence Day"), passionate rockers ("Out in the Street"), dramatic ballads ("Point Blank"), and even a couple of good-natured goofs ("Cadillac Ranch," "Crush on You," "Ramrod"). A sprawling double-disc set, The River offers proof that Springsteen could do it all and could do it better than virtually anyone else. --Daniel Durchholz

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City

There's only one better way to experience these performances by Bruce Springsteen and his reunited E Street Band, and that's if you were actually in Madison Square Garden when they were recorded in June and July 2000. This two-disc set includes more than three hours of music. Disc One features the 14 songs that were aired by HBO in 2001, while Disc Two adds another 11 tunes released here for the first time. The Boss and his band are in top form; their sheer exuberance at playing together, not to mention the joy and inspiration they provide their audience, are palpable, thanks in no small part to the excellent direction and superb sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM stereo). Highlights? Almost everything, from timeless anthems like "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" to the riveting "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a bluesy, solo "Born in the U.S.A." All together now: Bruuuuuuce! --Sam Graham
Bruce and the band's historical 10-night stand at Madison Square Garden in 2000 has been captured in this dynamic concert program that boasts 80 minutes of additional footage to the original HBO presentation. Songs include "The River," "Atlantic City," "Badlands," "Born to Run," "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Youngstown," and the controversial "American Skin (41 Shots)" 180 min. on two discs. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, PCM stereo; photo gallery; featurette.

The “Clone Wars” goes back to the original Star Wars film when Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that he was once a Jedi knight the same as your father and that they fought together in the Clone Wars. Since that moment fans have been obsessed with what the clone wars were. This new TV series takes place immediately after the events of Star Wars-Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker and introduces us to some new characters such as Ahsoka Tano a girl Jedi knight as well as characters we already know.Product Measures: .94 x 5.63 x 7.06
After an impressive debut season, the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars roars back for a sophomore slate of adventures that tops its predecessor in both action and mythos-related dramatics. Situated in the Star Wars timeline between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the 22 episodes center around Anakin Skywalker's promotion to Jedi Knight in an attempt to rally the Jedis in the face of General Grievous's attacks. Joined by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he's sent to the planet Geonosis in pursuit of the villain, only to find its population enslaved--and worse--by the Separatists. The fight for the people of Geonosis is easily the highlight of the series, but secondary story lines offer solid intrigue as well, most notably in the arrival of bounty hunter Cad Bane, whose mission is to find children sensitive to the Force, and the appearance of Boba Fett, who vows to avenge the death of his father by Mace Windu. A rampaging giant monster, scads of political intrigue, and some genuinely impressive battle sequences all add to the enjoyment, but what really elevates season two is its darker tone, as evidenced in "Brain Invaders," where Anakin's torture of a prisoner gives a hint of his future, and the terrifying, zombiefied prisoners of Geonosis. The more serious approach, as well as the lack of comic relief (most notably, no Jar Jar Binks), will undoubtedly please adult Star Wars fans, though younger devotees might be somewhat disturbed by the turn of events; thankfully, there is plentiful action and derring-do to balance out the murkier deeds. Extras include substantive featurettes in which director Dave Filoni and his crew discuss a quartet of episodes, including the Geonosis story line and the influence of Godzilla on their own reptilian menace. There's also a detailed, 68-page booklet filled with character design and the artists' notes. --Paul Gaita

When the theatrical release of James Cameron's Titanic was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200 million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Studios as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Some studio executives were confident, others horrified, but the clarity of hindsight turned Cameron into an Oscar-winning genius, a shrewd businessman, and one of the most successful directors in the history of motion pictures. Titanic would surpass the $1 billion mark in global box-office receipts (largely due to multiple viewings, the majority by teenage girls), win 11 Academy Awards including best picture and director, produce the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. A bona fide pop-cultural phenomenon, the film has all the ingredients of a blockbuster (romance, passion, luxury, grand scale, a snidely villain, and an epic, life-threatening crisis), but Cameron's alchemy of these ingredients proved more popular than anyone could have predicted. His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic fate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the Titanic disaster. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief but never-forgotten love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn Titanic into an emotional experience. Present-day framing scenes (featuring Gloria Stuart as the 101-year-old Rose) add additional resonance to the story, and although some viewers proved vehemently immune to Cameron's manipulations, few can deny the production's impressive achievements. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the sunset silhouette of Titanic during its first evening at sea, or the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels. In terms of sets and costumes alone, the film is never less than astounding. More than anything else, however, the film's overwhelming popularity speaks for itself. Titanic is an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. Titanic is an epic love story on par with Gone with the Wind, and like that earlier box-office phenomenon, it's a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

"A film for passionate thinkers."
This strange experiment in filmed conversation finds three people--a physicist, a poet, a politician--yammering about the environment, science, art, government, and much else, all in an effort either to find or to dispute connections between disparate subjects. There is no story, as such--just lots of chatter (much of it not particularly profound) shot against a variety of picturesque backgrounds. If director Bernt Capra thought this would turn out to be another My Dinner with André, that fantasy falls on its face. --Tom Keogh

Band of Brothers
Sale Price: $32.00
|
|
|
An impressively rigorous, unsentimental, and harrowing look at combat during World War II, Band of Brothers follows a company of airborne infantry--Easy Company--from boot camp through the end of the war. The brutality of training takes the audience by increments to the even greater brutality of the war; Easy Company took part in some of the most difficult battles, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the failed invasion of Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as the liberation of a concentration camp and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. Band of Brothers turns a vast historical event into a series of potent personal experiences; it's a deeply engrossing and affecting accomplishment. --Bret Fetzer
Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, this 10-part miniseries details the harrowing experiences of the men of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Corps during World War II. From basic training to D-Day and beyond, this important series takes you into the trenches for a personal glimpse at the country's "greatest generation." Damian Lewis, Donnie Wahlberg, Ron Livingston, Scott Grimes star. 11 3/4 hrs. total on six discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: Spanish; featurette; interviews; photo gallery.

More Info On Point Set:

Is There A Point When You Will Never Need To Set Goals?
You have set life goals, and as a goal setter work to achieve them. You have seen some success, and feel you have some inertia causing you to press forward. But, when you achieve those goals, will it be it? Will you never need to set goals again? As you read every word of this article, you will find out the truth about goal setting.
We are goal striving mechanisms in the base sense. We get hungry - we get food. We want a holiday - we go on holiday. We want a car - we get a car. This in essence makes us have desires, and we act to get them. Though these examples everyone does, so few people set big long range goals. Those kinds of goals that looks to a time, which we can't directly see.
You are unique, because only such a few people do that. Now, you have 0-100% chance of achievement. Simply setting goals, and writing those goals down causes your success rate to go up considerably; perhaps a 50% chance of success. This is the scientific point of view of success, and I like it. Because I want my goals to be successful, as I am sure you are committed to there achievement.
There is one point that takes it to 100% and that is constant and ever growing smart action. So, you do this and accomplish your vision, your big goal. Here many people get comfortable, and relax in the success. They forget to set new goals, and boredom kicks in. We don't realize the truth.
The truth comes in the Bible funnily enough. It contains a wisdom, which applies to all, whatever the denomination. Without a vision people perish is a term which many have heard of, and is exact in our lives today as goal setters and achievers. This means that if your mental vision ever appears as your surroundings, then you have a big problem in your hands.
I rather you learn this now, and not have that mistake. This is why many people pass on, after retirement. We have worked all our lives, and got comfortable. We don't have a sense of a future, what to do next.
In my life, I have set 3 stages in my life. And I am currently on the first stage. That point of getting to a certain level. This stage is in-depth, I know the vision. For the other 2 points I only have a vague idea. I feel this is important, though I know my third stage is primarily philanthropic, you can't paint all of it or you make your life rigid and not open to new possibilities.
So, we come to a point of realization. We realize that goals will always need to be there, every day of our lives here. You will need to constantly have a vision of a horizon which drives you and compels you to act. To get out of bed in the morning feeling great at what new harbors you can visit.
