For its first new set of music since 2000's Warning, Green Day tears up the blueprint and comes up with something unexpected: a punk rock concept album built around elaborate melodies, odd tempo changes, and a collection of songs that freely reference classic rock warhorses like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. "She's a Rebel" and "St. Jimmy" might sound like vintage Green Day, but the rest of the disc finds the Northern California trio trying on a variety of different guises: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a cliché-strewn Foo Fighters-style power ballad; "Extraordinary Girl" floats on Indian strings; and the hushed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Jessica Simpson record. It doesn't always work. "Dearly Beloved" eerily resembles the Alarm's "68 Guns," while the title track eerily resembles something Green Day has already done far too many times. It's hard to see just where the Alien Anthology Blu-ray boxset could have been improved. Nominally a collection of the four main films in the franchise, what's actually been bundled together here is one of the finest DVD or Blu-ray boxsets to date, boasting a series of features that genuinely go into a lot of depth about the movies themselves. And what movies they are. Alien and Aliens are both exceptional pieces of cinema, and rightly regarded as classics in their own right. Alien 3, meanwhile, has to be classed as an interesting and muddled failure, yet it's still got a lot to like about it. Alien: Resurrection? It's perhaps the least ambitious of the four films, but in the early stages at least, it's still with merit. Each of the films is presently strongly, surprising given the variable DVD versions of each we've seen to date. But it's the mammoth package of extras that set a template for pretty much every other Blu-ray boxset on the market. Spread across six discs, you not only get two cuts of each film, but you get extra features that are as impressive as they comprehensive. Presented brilliantly, it's an unmissable box set, and you get at least two all-time classics as part of it. --Jon Foster

Mike and the 'bots succumb to the horrors of Coleman Francis, actor, director, but by no means auteur. It's possible that Francis is the worst filmmaker of all time--he makes Ed Wood look like Kubrick. The plot (or what shreds of it are in evidence) moves mysteriously from post-Castro Cuba through inexplicable chase scenes, and somehow ends up in a tungsten mine. Along the way a lot of coffee is consumed, and Tom Servo, Crow, and Mike virtually trip over each other picking apart the movie and quipping over its infamously terrible dialogue. "Castro" has an obviously fake beard, John Carradine croons his way through "Night Train to Mondo Fine," and Cuba itself seems to be situated in the middle of a small lake. With murky cinematography, blink-and-miss-them edits, and incoherent plot turns, Red Zone Cuba provides ample fodder for Mike and his robot pals' scathing wit. Though MST3K has churned up some awful, awful movies on which to work its magic, Red Zone Cuba is only equaled in its awfulness by the truly disturbingly terrible Manos: Hands of Fate. Movies so bad are rare. Thank goodness. --Tod Nelson

Aerial spectacle gives this World War II drama a lift. Based on the true adventures of the Tuskegee Airmen, who battled Nazis in the air and racism on the ground, Red Tails is built around four pilots, each with a character-type-appropriate nickname: the daredevil is named Lightning (David Oyelowo), the likable boozer is Easy (Nate Parker), the kid trying to prove himself is Junior (Tristan Wilds), and the joker is called, uhm, Joker (Elijah Kelley). While these four chafe at their lousy assignments at the front, Colonel Bullard (Terrence Howard, applying his steely rasp to fervent, inspirational speeches) fights back in Washington to give these men a chance to prove themselves… and when they get that chance, prove themselves they do. This is a crucial bit of history--racial integration in the military was a key step leading to the civil rights movement decades later. Regrettably, this powerful material has been reduced to ham-fisted clichés, groaning under the weight of clumsy exposition. Such flimsy hokum is particularly surprising coming from co-screenwriter Aaron McGruder, creator of the sharply satirical The Boondocks; one suspects that the heavy hand of producer George Lucas was a factor. Nonetheless, when Red Tails takes to the air, the movie--like the pilots--shows its mettle. Though the digital effects are inexplicably uneven, the dizzying dogfight choreography will make your nerves tingle. --Bret Fetzer

This hit-and-miss 1988 comedy pairs John Candy and Dan Aykroyd in a story of one family's summer vacation all but ruined by the uninvited appearance of another, more loutish family. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directs from a half-hearted John Hughes script, which reduces Hughes's jokes-and-epiphanies formula (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) to true gaudiness. On the other hand, Annette Bening makes her screen debut here.
