Texan Nut Sheller Co 00001 Nutsheller
Sale Price: $12.99

R.D. "Shorty" York, who owned York Body and Fender Works in San Angelo, invented the popular sheller after watching a squirrel peel a pecan. York got a patent for the sheller in 1945, and the device went on the market in November 1953.
York got his idea for the aluminum sheller with blades from a pair of pliers. The instrument operates by means of a pliers-type handle, with sharp teeth to bite off the ends and sides of the nut, producing perfect halves.
A shield to direct the falling hulls into a container was an addition demanded by the inventor's wife who grew weary of picking up nut shells from the living room rug. By removing the shield you have a great tool for lobster and crab legs.
Improvements have been made over the years, including replacement teeth, and handles shaped to fit your hands. These days plastic sleeves are fitted on the aluminum handles to keep users' hands from getting black. And the aluminum shield has been replaced by high-impact plastic.
The Texan "York" Nut Sheller is the finest tool for removing shells from all kinds of nuts, including Pecans, Brazil Nuts, English Walnuts, Almonds, and Filberts. (Not recommended for Black Walnuts or Macadamians).
Left handed models are available by request. The handles are made of the finest cast aluminum. The shell deflector shield allows indoor nut shelling without making the mess that nut crackers create.

Battle of Los Angeles

Having successfully fused music and politics from their start, inspiring both moshing and young minds in the process, Rage Against the Machine emerges in peak form with merely their third album in seven years. Guitarist Tom Morello is one of the most distinctive and innovative players of his era, and his foil, vocalist/lyricist Zack De La Rocha, is as unrelenting and inspiring as ever on The Battle of Los Angeles. Rage, whose past antics include performing naked with duct tape over their mouths to protest censorship, released Battle on Election Day, but the politics of the group can be separated from the sounds. Indeed, the 45 minutes of mayhem heard here can be enjoyed solely as rousing aggro hip-hop rock. There's more variety found on Battle than on its predecessors, however. "Sleep Now in the Fire" is one of their most straight-ahead rock tunes. The trippy guitar on "Calm Like a Bomb" is out there even for the adventurous Morello. And "Born a Broken Man" serves up lovely musical interludes. Overall, the more finely honed Rage heard on Battle may not inspire a generation of young revolutionaries, but they still stir up more mutinous spirit than the rest of the current rock pack. --Katherine Turman

Puccini: Tosca

Opera is an inherently theatrical medium that does not lend itself readily to the realism of film treatment. The shining exception is Puccini's Tosca, an action-packed melodrama that unfolds in three taut and gripping acts like the meatiest of Hollywood films noir. And unlike most operas, these three acts are set in three very specific Roman locales. Thus this 1976 film takes place in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle (Act 1), the Palazzo Farnese (Act 2), and the Castel Sant'Angelo (Act 3). The evocative settings, however, would be mere window-dressing if the cast wasn't just right. Fortunately Plácido Domingo is at his virile peak in the heroic tenor role of Cavaradossi; Raina Kabaivanska is a sultry, vocally beautiful Tosca; and a more infamous and domineering Scarpia than that of Sherrill Milnes can hardly be imagined. Bruno Bartoletti and the New Philharmonia Orchestra give lustily dramatic support. Here the music and vocals are prerecorded and the singers mime to the playback. Occasionally the result is a little unnatural, but overall the cast members are good enough actors to bring off the conceit even in the close-ups. It all pays off triumphantly with the gripping realism of the rooftop finale, the one place where film can improve on stage. With the authenticity of the settings assured and such distinguished leads singing so well, this is an almost ideal filmed Tosca. --Mark Walker
Raina Kabaivanska, Placido Domingo, and Sherrill Milnes star in this Gianfranco de Bosio-directed version of the Puccini opera, with Bruno Bartoletti conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra.

Cecilia Bartoli's new CD features a collection of music that could not be heard in her native Rome at the start of the 18th century due to Papal censorship. Theaters, the Church felt, were places of evil and corruption and operas led people to immorality. But some music-loving senior members of the priesthood asked composers to write oratorios and cantatas--indeed, operas without staging, essentially--for their own private entertainment. Call it what you will, the music is sensational--by turns virtuosic, gentle, and playful--and always expressive: just right, it seems, for Cecilia Bartoli's temperament. The opening aria on the CD, a call for peace in the name of Jesus, is, in fact, a dazzling martial air with trumpets blaring and the voice going through an amazing array of coloratura fireworks. It shows Bartoli at her most aggressive. The listener is practically hurled back from the speakers when she begins, with rapid-fire runs and trills and cascades of notes, all perfectly in place. Showy arias are offset by several tender ones ("Lascia la spina" from Handel's Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno returns in the composer's Rinaldo, four years later, as the now-famous "Lascia ch'io pianga"), and Bartoli exhibits again, her many, many levels of pianissimo and sensitive phrasing. Marc Minkowski and his Musiciens are just right for this repertoire and back Bartoli up superbly. This is a fascinating project, rivetingly performed and presented. --Robert Levine

This video presents a full 100 minutes of Kathy Kaehler's workout programs and advice. Kaehler, trainer to the stars, presents several different workouts, accompanied by some of her celebrity trainees. Depending on your level and goals, you can mix and match. Beginning Step with Jamie Gertz is 20 minutes, consisting of a simple, repetitive step workout with plenty of instruction. The intermediate step section with Justin Bateman adds another 15 minutes and uses hand weights with choreography that works the muscles harder, but is almost as basic and repetitive as before. The advanced section with Julianne Phillips is another 15 minutes, with faster choreography, a weight vest as well as hand weights, and a higher step (you don't have to do all of these intensifiers at once). If you like varied choreography with challenging patterns, this video will bore you with its many, many repetitions of basic moves. But if your preference is for simple, repeated moves that burn fat and work the muscles effectively, Kaehler is a knowledgeable personal trainer. After the aerobic step workout, you get a series of body-sculpting segments using light weights for the upper body and exercises such as lunges for the lower body. Kaehler's celebrity trainees in these segments are Penelope Ann Miller (weights), Tawny Kitaen (abdominals), and Beverly D'Angelo (stretching). Kaehler teaches pushups and floor work solo. --Joan Price

Tad, Leap, and Lily hop from the pages of the amazingly popular Leap Pad learning toys onto the television screen in this attention grabbing phonics program. Tad's disappointment at being unable to help his family with an important presentation at the letter factory quickly turns to excitement when he meets Professor Quigley and joins each of the letters of the alphabet in their own fun-filled classroom devoted to learning their unique sound. Tad practices karate kicks with the k's, digs the vibes with the cool cat d's drumming on the bongos, and snores peacefully with the z's while learning to recognize each letter and the sound it makes. A catchy, fun song serves as a summation of each letter's "class" and entices even the most reluctant of toddlers (and their parents) to sing each letter's sound. An interactive game follows the program and gives children a chance to practice their newfound skills of recognizing letters and their sounds. Consumers expect great educational products from LeapFrog and this DVD won't disappoint. (Ages 2 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi

More Info On San Angelo:

My heart goes out to the people of Japan. In 1970 I was a member of a hula troupe and we performed at The Narugo Hotel in Nagoya for three months. After landing in Tokyo, our troupe boarded the 'bullet train' to Sendai (the northern capital of Japan). Then we rode by car for a couple of hours until we reached our hotel. The people at the hotel and the President of the hotel, President Kumagai and his wife Mama San greeted us with broad and welcoming smiles. They bowed deeply and we bowed in return. We were taken to a room in the hotel where we were treated with a special dinner of sukiyaki made and served the authentic Japanese way. We were instructed every step of the way about how to proceed with adding each ingredient into the bowl of hot soup. What struck me the most was the genteel, polite and respectful way in which the people treated us. I felt so much aloha in Japan. I loved the people and never forgot their hospitality. When it was time to return home even though I was homesick, I was sad to leave the country.
When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, I was taken back in time when I was there many years ago. My memories of northern Japan (Sendai, Narita and Nagoya) came back to me crystal clear. It was as if I had just been there. I remembered the beauty of the countryside with it's deep green color. The numerous fishing boats with their fishing nets dotted the ocean ports. The humility of the people was astounding. They spoke with low voices not calling attention to themselves. At one point during my experience in Japan, I contemplated staying there. I have been riveted to the television even though others may have had their fill of the news coverage. I had lived through a disaster, Hurricane Iniki on the island of Kauai that hit on September 11, 1992. This was a level 4 hurricane that leveled the entire island. I lost my home. For five days I was in shock. I thought I was going to die along with many other people. I'll never forget that sinking and helpless feeling. This is another reason why my heart goes out to the people of Japan. When you've lived through a disaster you carry a deep sense of compassion for others during times of need. Please pray for the Japanese people and their country. Whatever happened there could just as easily happen anywhere else. Have compassion, integrity and love. Visualize engulfing the country with positive energies and with white light. You may also visualize different colors of light such as violet for protection (the light of forgiveness), green for healing, blue for calmness and pink for love. We're all in this life together. Whatever happened in Japan could just as well happen to us.

The Top 10 Model Train Shops in Texas
For the past year I've been compiling a list of model train stores for my model railroading website. These shops all look like fantastic places to visit, but what are the most popular? Here is a list for the great state of Texas.
The most popular model railroading shops (based on online chatter) in the state of Texas are:
10. Model Train Crossing in Hurst
9. Papa Ben's Train Place in Houston
8. Rebel Hobbies in San Antonio
7. Midlothian Hobbies in Midlothian
6. RC Hobby Shop in Sugar Land
4. Victoria Hobby Shop in Victoria (tie for fourth place)
4. Larry's Hobbies in Houston (tie for fourth place)
3. Collectible Trains and Toys in Dallas
2. King's Hobby in Austin
...and the most popular shop for model trains in Texas is...
1. G and G Model Shop in Houston
Hobby shops not quite making my top 10 were Collectible Caboose in Cedar Park, Dibble's Hobbies in San Antonio, Hal's Hobby Warehouse in El Paso, Kerbey Lane Doll Shoppe in Austin, Mikes Hobby Shop in Carrollton, and Wild Bill's Hobby Shop in Irving.
Nice to see that the four biggest cities in Texas all have great train shops with Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antionio all in the top 10. However, Houston looks like "train city" in Texas with almost a third of the top stores being there.
Also in Texas be sure to visit some of the great railroading museums including Amarillo Railroad Museum in Amarillo, Greenville Railroad Museum in Greenville, and Railway Museum of San Angelo in San Angelo.
I compiled this list by searching for the hobby shops listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online. I further screened this list to include only pages that mentioned model railroading.
Check out my complete list of Model Train Shops in Texas at www.ModelTrainsWithLarry.com which has complete contact information for each shop including an address, phone number, and map to the store.
