Bowhunting Tips and Techniques
Bowhunting Tips and Techniques
Now that you've got all your equipment ready, it's time to go out to the field and try bowhunting! Here are some tips and techniques to make your bowhunting experience a successful one.
• Make sure you have the proper form when shooting. The basic steps in archery include drawing the string, aiming at the target, and releasing the arrow. It is important that you maintain the proper stance all throughout the process. If you're just starting out, take some lessons about the proper form and way of holding equipment from an archery instructor or from the local archery shop. It is also advisable to join your local archery club so that you can learn more tips from the experts.
• Minimize scent and noise. These are the two biggest reasons why bowhunters fail. Remove the scent from your body and your clothing by using unscented soaps. Avoid going near campfires and other things that have string odors. Use scent eliminators or cover scents to keep from getting noticed.
• Choose quiet equipment. When you can, choose tools that produce little noise. Also, get yourself accessories that can reduce the amount of sound produced. Use a bow stabilizer in order to absorb noise and string silencers in order to minimize the vibrations produced by the bowstring.
• Before going out to hunt, make sure that your equipment is ready and secure. Check the screws to make sure they are fastened, align the sights and ensure that they are intact, and make sure that your equipment is in proper working order. It is also important to learn how to tune your bow and acquire some basic knowledge on simple repairs of your equipment, in case they break down during the hunt.
• Do your research. It is best to do some research before you actually hunt. Read about your prey, study the terrain where you will be hunting and exchange shooting techniques with experts in the field. There are numerous resources available to you, including books, hunting magazines, websites and online forums.
• Know when and where to aim. Remember that a broadhead arrow kills by causing massive bleeding in the target. Thus, it is important that you aim for vital organs, such as the lungs, in order to kill fast. Shoot when your target is relaxed or pre-occupied with something else. Do not shoot when the animal has its ears in a forward position, as you will probably be heard.
• Practice. The only way to master bowhunting is to keep on practicing. Get to know your equipment very well and master its use. Practice shooting at various distances and heights, while wearing your hunting gear, in order to simulate the environment you will be shooting in. Going to an archery range and mastering your technique on 3-D targets will help. However, you will find that there is a big difference when shooting a moving animal as opposed to a stationary target; so go out in the field and hunt!

Broadhead tuning archery?
Getting ready to shoot my thunder heads for the first time, i am a little confused.
1) Everything I read says to make adjustments change the nocking point on the bow string or move the arrow. Would it not be easier to just adjust the sights for this?? My sights are easy to move around. I figure i must be missing something here.
2) How exact does alignment for the broadheads have to be. I bought the arrows and the shop glued in the inserts, so there is only one positioin I can screw the broadheads into. Is this going to be a problem?
Thanks for the help
If you shoot your arrows through paper at 8' with target behind it you can see if your arrow is fishtailing, or porpoising upon coming out of the bow. You are trying to obtain a bullet hole appearance with just the fletching leaving three tears. ie the nock is end is perfectly following the point. A up and down tear would require you moving your nock point up or down and adjust this first
a right left tear is the arrow rest adjustment in or out. Once you get a bullet hole your bow is shooting in perfect center shot. Now you can remove your target points and install the broad head.
Spin the broad head tipped arrow like a top to be sure the broad head and shaft are aligned. It should spin like a top. No wobble. Now shoot your broad heads and adjust sight for point of impact on target. Always move the pin to the arrow in the target, or as I say chase the arrow with the sight pin. If the arrow is hitting right of the spot, move the pin to the right. Also note if in tuning your broad heads for wobble, with thunderheads you can loosen the broad head and rotate the collar 1/3rd of a turn and hold while tightening and make adjustments to true it. Sometimes you may have to put on a different shaft to get them to spin.
Note: If you are shooting carbon shafts DO NOT HEAT THEM TO ROTATE THE INSERT!! you will ruin them. Alum shafts you can if hot melt was used on the inserts. It is not really necessary to have the blades in alignment with fletching. Hope this helps you, and you can go to Easton.com and get all the info on tuning your arrows there. Good luck to you. Hope this helps
