Babe: Pig In The City - Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture
Sale Price: $16.36

While it's true that kids love the adorable talking pink pork-pie piggy called Babe, there are subtleties truly appreciated only by adult viewers. The film is enormously smart, greatly entertaining, and funny. The same holds true for the soundtrack, but to the ears of adult listeners, there is a menacing edge to the voice of the narrator, and the jet plane roars warning of the plight about to befall Babe and his "human," Esme Hoggart. Nigel Westlake's score cleverly reminds us of the eerie witch-on-her-bicycle trill and the flying-monkey refrain from The Wizard of Oz, and while little ones are tickled by the singing and commentating mice, it is adults who will correlate them with a Greek chorus. Westlake seems to effortlessly glide from cartoony wah-wah to pepped-up waltz to soaring string assault. The remainder of the soundtrack veers from a classical cat choir to standards from Edith Piaf and Dean Martin to the adult-alternative friendliness of the Chieftans, the Mavericks, and Peter Gabriel, who performs the film's theme, the lovely Randy Newman tune "That'll Do." --Paige La Grone

Yoga for Your Eyes
Sale Price: $19.94
"This is yoga because this is union with the eyes," explains Meir Schneider in the introduction to Yoga for Your Eyes. Born legally blind, Schneider underwent many operations as a child but was unable to see more than light and shadow; he had to do all of his schoolwork in Braille. Today he is able to drive a car without use of glasses or contacts, after improving his sight holistically. In this video, Schneider shares his techniques, using movements that originate in two main sources: the techniques of ophthalmologist William Bates and Tibetan yoga. To begin, Schneider instructs you to remove your contacts or glasses (how he expects you to see the screen clearly enough to follow the exercises is not explained). Then he moves on to "palming," a vision-improving exercise. The instruction is thorough, including directions on how to breathe, and the movements are simple and relaxing. The second segment is "Testing Your Vision," in which you're told to make your own eye chart to graph your improvement. "Stimulating Your Peripheral Vision" is next, and it requires three pieces of black construction paper and tape to help you balance the use of both eyes together. "Outdoor Exercises" explains why older people have more vision difficulties and shows how to improve this problem. The final exercises--"Sunning," "Skying," and "Long Swing"--help you to adapt to bright lights. Schneider is an earnest instructor, who obviously believes strongly in his methods. If you're looking for a natural way to improve your eyesight, Yoga for Your Eyes is the place to begin. Also included with the video is a 62-page study guide. --Jenny Brown

The Book of Eli
Sale Price: $4.88
Post-apocalyptic actioner stars Denzel Washington as Eli, a loner travelling across what's left of America in order to protect a sacred book that could provide mankind's salvation...or its destruction. Armed with weapons and his unwavering faith, he comes into conflict with Carnegie (Gary Oldman)--a scheming warlord who is determined to use the tome for his own purposes. Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals co-star; directed by the Hughes Brothers. 118 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; deleted scenes; bonus short "A Lost Tale: Billy."
With unflappable cool and surprising gentleness, Denzel Washington strides a bleak and barren world in The Book of Eli. Eli is headed west, but on the way, he passes devastation and squalor, and occasionally he must mete out some devastation of his own with a sharp blade. But when he arrives in what passes for a town in this dust-and-ash future, the power-hungry owner of the town's bar, Carnegie (Gary Oldman, looking a million years old), covets his one important possession. (Spoiler alert, sort of: it becomes apparent pretty quickly that it's a King James Bible.) Conflict ensues! Though the plot is simple and the "mystery" of the book doesn't last long, The Book of Eli is carried along effortlessly by its star. Washington has always had a compelling mixture of authority and tenderness, and it's this latter quality that makes this contribution to the testosterone-and-violence-drenched post-apocalyptic subgenre unexpectedly human. The script, while not particularly original, has effective dialogue and is smart enough not to explain too much. The supporting actors--including Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jennifer Beals (who hasn't aged a day since Flashdance), and Ray Stevenson (Rome)--are all capable and easy on the eyes. The movie's bleached-out, sepia-tone look isn't new either, but it suits the subject matter. Anyone who wants to be offended by the movie's spiritual conclusion would be wiser to enjoy the subversive insinuation that religion can enslave as much as save. All in all, a competent action movie with some enjoyably atypical elements. --Bret Fetzer

How could you explain sight to a blind person, or sond to a deaf person?
For deaf people, you could use vibrations.
They can't actually understand sound or sight (unless they went blind or deaf later on in life), but you can describe the feeling to them through other means.
Theatre review: Blind Date
Do you believe in love at first sight? I do, because I once spent 90 minutes under the spell of Rebecca Northan, whose Blind Date is back for a return engagement at the Brigantine Room as part of World Stage.
