The Crossbow: Its Military and Sporting History, Construction and Use
Sale Price: $10.37
|
|
|
This unique exploration of a weapon used for centuries will fascinate historians and enthusiasts alike. The crossbow, probably introduced to England by the Norman invaders in 1066, was once considered so barbarous that it was prohibited as a “weapon hateful to God and unfit for Christians.” Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey, an accomplished engineer, here describes military and sporting crossbows and their dimensions, components, and ranges; provides hard-to-find information on crossbow construction; gives details about modern crossbows such as bullet-shooting crossbows and bolt-shooting crossbows; and peeks at unusual crossbows like the Chinese repeating crossbow. Comprehensively illustrated with original drawings and selections from historical manuscripts, this is a necessary reference book for anyone who hunts with a crossbow or collects or studies weapons of the past.

Crossbows - So Much More Than a Novel Way to Prepare a Fruit Salad
If the word 'crossbow' conjures up the image of a simple bow-and-arrow affair, then think again. Crossbows have come a long way since the days of William Tell and rosy apples. Today, whilst they are still used mainly for sport and hunting, it seems crossbows are also becoming the weapon of choice.
Essentially, a crossbow comprises a bow that is mounted on a stock or stick. Early bows, which were also known as prods or laths, were made from a single piece of yew or ash. Nowadays, they are commonly made of metal. A steel crossbow helps its ammunition pack a more powerful projectile punch, whilst laser sights pinpoint the target with frightening accuracy.
The crossbow's projectile is generally referred to as a bolt. Although they are nowhere near as long as arrows, bolts are far heavier. This, coupled with the fact that crossbows have a short draw length, means that the mechanism that draws the bolt has to be extra strong. Again, steel has a major role to play.
Like arrows and darts, to optimise its flight the bolt usually has three fletches. Various heads are available, including the popular 'quarrel': an incredibly understated name, since it comes to a vicious four-sided tip. Others are made in the shape of a sickle, designed to cut ropes or rigging, and there is even a highly specialised bolt used for collecting biopsy samples from blubber.
This ammunition is held in a quiver, but forget the natty leather holder that Robin Hood slung on his back to hold his arrows. Today's quivers usually attach to the weapon itself, holding the bolts in place along the crossbow, ready for rapid fire, and can be quickly removed and reattached.
A crossbow's power lies not only in its kinetic strength - it is also visually extremely threatening. Leonardo da Vinci had this firmly in mind when he invented his giant crossbow. It was to measure more than 27 metres across, be moved around on six wheels, and aimed to bring absolute fear to any enemy in its path. All a far cry from the crossbow used for comedy effect in TV's 'Frasier' five hundred years later.
The crossbow also makes onto the bookshelves, generally lurking amongst Crime and occasionally shooting through psychological thrillers. Anyone who has read 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' by Lionel Shriver will remember all too well the chilling scene in the school gymnasium. No doubt Kevin would have quite enjoyed bringing an apple for the teacher.

Where can I find white dvd (wii) cases?
Where can I find standard white dvd cases like the ones Nintendo Wii games are packaged in? I'd rather not order in bulk online, or charge a small amount for just one or two. Do any stores carry these where I could just go and pay cash? I'd like to print out labels for 'Wii Sports' and 'Links Crossbow Training' and keep my games in proper cases to protect them.
Thanks for your help!
Actually they come with any wii points card you buy, they come in a game box for some reason which means you can use it as a spare.
