What can I pair with a vintage black gingham skirt?

I bought this amazing vintage black gingham skirt today. The squares are larger and it is A-line, circa 1980's. I need to find a style and color of shirt that will compliment its retro feel without making it look like a school uniform or frumpy. Any suggestions would help. Thank you!

I'm an old guy with no fashion sense. I do know what I like though and as far as I am concerned a woman dressed in black and white just can't make a mistake. I don't care if it is 50/50 or predominately one of the colors with just a trace of the other.
