Even a decade after his death at age 38 in 1997, Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole remains Hawaii's best-known and most beloved singer. His career began when he and his older brother, Skippy, formed a group in their hometown near Honolulu. The two performed together until the latter died in 1982. The band continued on for some years but it was Iz's haunting voice, with its searing yet limpid falsetto, that captured the popular imagination. Indeed, his 'ukulele-laced version of "Over the Rainbow" is widely thought to be the only interpretation that could possibly stand up to Judy Garland's original. Now that the definitive retrospective, Alone in IZ World (2001), has been released, it is perhaps inevitable that new arrangements should be slipped in under Iz's inimitable, indelible vocal tracks. The good news is, however, that these particular lush orchestrations, while totally superfluous, are nonetheless respectful and in good taste, never overwhelming the singing (as if anything could!). There are no revelations, but, fortunately, no unpleasant shocks, either. Perhaps, had he lived, Iz might have decided to go this route anyway. As with Louis Armstrong's (the title of this album refers to Iz's own cover of "What A Wonderful World") and Buddy Holly's string-backed experiments, it's simply yet another way to celebrate the legacy of a departed genius. --Christina Roden

Eugene O'Neill loved this feature-length adaptation of his one-act sea plays, with intelligent bridging material written by Dudley Nichols and a final movement, both hellish and elegiac, appropriate to the onset of World War II. John Ford directed, in his more self-consciously arty vein (à la The Informer) but with no loss of power or passion. It's entirely fitting that the director shared his panel in the credits with cinematographer Gregg Toland, who had just shot The Grapes of Wrath for him in hard, dust-bowl sunlight and would next enter the labyrinth of Orson Welles's Citizen Kane; you'd be thrilled to have any frame of this film blown up and hanging on your wall. The focus is on the working seamen aboard a merchant ship making its way from the Caribbean to New York harbor and then England, with dangerous cargo on the transatlantic leg. Thomas Mitchell (who had won a 1939 Oscar in Ford's Stagecoach) gives a career-best performance as Driscoll; Ian Hunter plays the enigmatic shipmate known only as "Smitty"; Ford regulars Barry Fitzgerald, John Qualen, Ward Bond, Arthur Shields, and Joseph Sawyer fill key roles; and the top-billed John Wayne contributes a surprisingly effective supporting performance as Ole, a gentle Swedish giant who really belongs on a farm somewhere. Although neglected in recent years--and seriously in need of restoration to do justice to its magnificent images--this movie has a permanent place of honor in one of the most amazing three-year creative streaks (throw in Young Mr. Lincoln, Drums Along the Mohawk, and How Green Was My Valley) any director ever had. --Richard T. Jameson
Aboard the freighter Glencairn, the lives of the crew are lived out in fear, loneliness, suspicion and cameraderie. The men smuggle drink and women aboard, fight with each other, spy on each other, comfort each other as death approaches, and rescue each other from danger.

An exhausted, outnumbered American infantry squad is charged with defending a frontline against the Germans in this top-notch WWII drama from director Don Siegel. Steve McQueen, Fess Parker, James Coburn, Bobby Darin, Nick Adams, and Bob Newhart lead the company into battle. 90 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; theatrical trailer.
Don Siegel brings his tough worldview and crisp, no-nonsense direction to this quintessential World War II drama of an undermanned American platoon in France holding off a German advance through sheer bluff and bravery. Steve McQueen is curt and surly as the insubordinate loner whose tactical skills and soldiering savvy make him indispensable to his new unit. His reputation precedes him, but commander Fess Parker is in no position to be choosy when he learns that his tired platoon will not be shipping home as rumored, but tossed into a ragged new offensive. Harry Guardino costars as the soulful Sarge; James Coburn is the slow-talking, forever-tinkering mechanic; Bobby Darin is the scavenger with a small fortune in trinkets; and Nick Adams is the Polish orphan and unit mascot. Bob Newhart makes his feature debut as a hopelessly lost typing clerk drafted into the undermanned unit and re-creates his nightclub shtick making phony phone calls near a Nazi listening post in the pillbox. Like Pork Chop Hill, this film is less a patriotic flag waver than a "war is hell" drama that frames the battle not in its tactical importance (which is negligible) but in its cost in human life. McQueen's taciturn performance as a ruthlessly effective soldier and Siegel's tough, lean direction make it a modest classic of the genre. --Sean Axmaker

Bette Davis won her second Best Actress Oscar for her showcase role in this sumptuous southern costume melodrama, which was released in 1938 in response to the phenomenal popularity of Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind. (It would take another full year for the famous film adaptation of Mitchell's novel to be released.) The setting is New Orleans in 1862, and Davis plays Julie, an egocentric southern belle who's used to getting her way. Henry Fonda plays the equally selfish banker who breaks off their engagement, prompting Julie to a variety of futile schemes to win him back. Gracefully directed by William Wyler, the film won Oscars for Davis and Fay Bainter (for Best Supporting Actress), and was nominated for Best Picture, Music Score, and Cinematography. Highlights include the lavish ball scene where unmarried ladies dressed in traditional white are horrified by Julie's scandalous red dress, and Fonda's subsequent pleasure upon witnessing Julie's humiliation. An absorbing period melodrama, this film was ultimately overshadowed by Gone with the Wind, but it remains a classic in its own right thanks to Wyler and his remarkable cast. --Jeff Shannon
Bette Davis didn't get to play Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, but she did get to play a troublesome Southern belle in William Wyler's 1938 Jezebel. Davis's character, a coquette fond of stirring up rivalries among the men, goes too far and loses her fiancé (Henry Fonda), but she finds atonement when she cares for him during illness. This handsome melodrama by Wyler (who later directed Davis in The Little Foxes) is fully absorbing (John Huston contributed to the script), and Davis's carefully constructed performance does make one draw instant comparisons with Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. --Tom Keogh

If you had a dime for every hemorrhoids treatment out there, you sure would not have to keep your day job. Choosing from the thousands of self-proclaimed magical cures can be overwhelming and time consuming. Your search for the best hemorrhoids treatment will end up with a much, much better result if you know what to look for.
By understanding your condition you can understand what types of components will solve your problem. People are surprisingly lazy these days. If they only took the small amount of time that is needed to understand the underlying factors in their situation and then research specific, potent and all natural ingredients that can attack each causation in their problem, they would indeed find quick relief with their hemorrhoids treatment.
White oak bark, a potent, natural herb that has been well known for centuries, has many helpful uses for this type of a problem. Few people realize that they need to strengthen and heal their veins as a large part of their hemorrhoids treatment. White oak bark has been studied and appreciated for its healing effects on weak veins. The inflammation that many feel and want to get rid of with their hemorrhoids treatment can be dissolved with a good, natural vein strengthener like white oak bark.
Also, the reason for the vein getting stretched out in the first place is that the vein had excess pressure put on it from poor digestion and constipation. The more you strain and push for bowel movements, the more pressure and pain you are causing to your situation. Your hemorrhoids treatment will need to help with digestion and regulating the bowels. White oak bark is also well known for its positive effects upon the bowels. Including white oak bark in your hemorrhoids treatment will surely aid in solving your problem quickly and completely.
Some cases of this ailment have developed tears in the veins which causes bleeding in that area. Any hemorrhoids treatment should include an ingredient to help with bleeding. If you cannot stop bleeding, it is very difficult to close up those sore and inflamed veins. White oak bark has also been known to help with hemorrhaging. This is why it would make such a wonderful addition to your hemorrhoids treatment.
White oak bark is useful for many other problems. The main problem you are focusing on now, though is finding a good hemorrhoids treatment. The best hemorrhoids treatment for you out there would be one that contains potent, all natural herbal ingredients with the inclusion of white oak bark.

our floor contractor installed red oak in between our rooms that should be white oak;?
the finish is very poor and needs to be redone; should e make him install the proper wood b4 he re does the job
so you know, we now have both oaks
Jffsacks, somehow you're forgetting that you're customer, the one paying here, and if it's not what you wanted or are willing to revise and accept change then the jobs no good and you just don't pay. If you've incurred a portion of this exense already you withold any balance until you're satisfied.
What I don't understand is how did this get this far before you noticed there was a problem and it wasn't stopped and/or corrected.
Here is what you need to do -
email and/or fax your concerns regarding the defects and deficiencies within this projects paremeters and performance(s) to this contractor. If this is something you contracted through a Home Depot or other retailer send them a copy and to the sub they have out on this job. Stand on your position and don't accept any revision or compromise. If they don't reply and make immediate remedies within 24 hours send them a default letter the same way conveying that they have 24 hours to be onsite with men and materials to coorect the defaults or you will consider the job/project abandoned by them and aregoing to bring in another contrctor to complete this.
As long as you have documentation relative to the type(s) of floors and finishes to be installed you're golden legally if you follow my advice. With this documentation bring in an alternate installer and explain to them that if they want the job you need a detailed written survey of what is and what isn't per initial contract and trades qualities.
