More Info On Whitetail Deer:

Whitetail deer are found across the North American region, at 29 million strong, including where cities are expanding. These areas intrude on what was once the whitetails domain. As deer become more and more exposed to this humane society, they become less afraid of humans. In these areas you can find deer walking right up to you, not spooked one bit, and coming into your yard to find whatever morsel of food they can find (deer can eat up to 5-9 lbs of food EVERY day).
Deer are herbivores and eat a variety of foods. Just like humans, deer have preferences of food. They will eat their favorite whenever given the chance. Some of the foods deer eat a lot are grass, leaves, acorns, apples, corn and berries. The deer teeth are designed to chew these tough foods.
While on the topic of senses, deer have very keen vision, hearing and smell. Although they are colorblind, the position of their eyes on the sides of their head allows them to have a field of vision of 310 degrees. This position however makes it hard for the deer to focus on objects. The muscles in the deer's head allow their ears to move in all directions, making their ears so sensitive to sound it is believed they can tell how far away the sound was made. Deer lick their nose to keep it moist, allowing scent particles to stick it and allowing the deer to smell better. Studies show deer can smell humans in underbrush days after we have been there.
Deer have very interesting changes in their fur throughout the year. The entire molting process can take months to occur, normally starting in the spring and ending in late summer. When hunting in October hunters will notice that in a week to two week span the deer's coats have changed from red to gray. In the winter they will notice the color has changed to bluish gray.
Deer also have very interesting changes in their antlers. Well nourished bucks will start growing their antlers in April. A buck will use its antlers to establish dominance over other male deer and for the right to mate with does. Antlers are the fastest growing tissue on earth and can grow up to 1/2" per day! The size mass and number of horns on antlers is determined by nutrition, genetics and age of the buck. Bucks mark their territory by rubbing their antlers on tree bark; this is called a buck rub. Once they mark their territory they will stay there until the area is taken over by predators or hunters.
When free of predators and hunting pressure deer can double their population in a year. When free of these pressures deer can also live to be 11 years old. This is when their teeth wear out and they can no longer eat. You can determine the age of a deer by its teeth. Like humans, deer's baby teeth fall out; when they are 18 months old. A full grown deer can stand 3 foot tall from the ground to its back and weigh 200 plus pounds.

North American Whitetail

What Are Some Whitetail Deer Hunting Techniques?
I am 17 years old, new hunter, and I'm going to New York to hunt with a 12 Guage shotgun and deer slugs. I am going to be in a heavily wooded area with some fields every now and then, and It will be cold and snowing. What are some good techniques I should know for hunting Whitetail in Up-State New York?
I will be out also, if you are hunting in Upstate NY you better be using a Remington 12 gauge!! If you are hunting southern zone it will be wet and mild, at least until Monday. Every year I sit in a tree and just wait if your quiet usually you will see something, one year I shot a deer after being in a tree for 15 min. other years it has been 3 hours and some years 7 hours, the key is to have patients, force yourself to wait another 15 minutes when you want to move, than another 15 min. I can't tell you how many times I have forced myself to stay in one spot when i didn't want to and ended up shooting a deer a short time later. Good luck.
