A little history...

Even in Ancient Rome a day dedicated to women was celebrated. On this day, women wore most attractive dresses and husbands showered their wives with expensive presents.

On March 8th 1857, women of New York gathered to hold their first protest for improved work conditions and raised wages. March 8th 1908, another historical moment for women took place in New York, fifteen thousand women protested shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Finally as of March 8th 1975, the United Nations declared this day an International Women's Day.

What is it that we women were so desperately trying to obtain? We wanted to be equal to men: to work, be entrepreneurs, deal with financial problems, etc. We have achieved all that we sought after. Are we happy now?

Alas, women can never be completely satisfied. We are too smart for our own good. Today we lack the most important element of life - TIME! We are so busy with that which we sought so hard to achieve. Today we must deal with our work and financial status, but no one took away our inherited responsibility for our family and children... On top of all this we must be slim, young and beautiful. Is it possible to achieve the balance between work and beauty? How can a young mother who goes to college and works full time achieve this balance? How about a mature woman who is an entrepreneur, mother and wife?

In the Christian Religion, can women be youth ministers?

The idea of the leader of the church is shown by overseer, pastor, preacher, priest, and so on. In some Christian churches, women are allowed to be leaders of the church, overseeing all the members. In some, they do not believe that a woman should ever preach or serve in a leadership position over a man. Many of these have no problem with a women teaching other women or teaching children and youth. Those churches that disagree with females preaching get it from a verse in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 "Let a woman learn in silence with full submission. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent." They fail to understand that the women in the church of Ephesus were coming to church for the first time in the lives. They came with a great deal of confusion. So, they were given advice. If you are confused about something, stay quiet, remain with composure (the real meaning of the word for silent in these verses), and do not teach because you do not have enough knowledge.

These were women that were trying to use their newly found Christian freedom as freedom to do anything in leadership. But, they didn't have the knowledge needed in order to truly teach anything. It is not something that is the same as today. We have more knowledge.

Other churches allow females to preach based upon the fact that we are one in Christ. The sexes do not matter when God is giving out his callings and his gifts. We are all his children.

Women were in fact praying and prophesying in the church. 1 Corinthians 11:5, "but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled disgraces her head--it is one and the same thing as having her head shaved." Paul did support women speaking in church. And, there are leaders that are women in the church as well.

Romans 16:1-4, "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a DEACON of the church at Cenchreae, so that you may welcome her in the Lord as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well. Greet Prisca and Aquila, who work with me in Christ Jesus, and who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles." Paul wrote Romans and showed two women here that were indeed leaders in the church. One named a deacon that was a position for preaching.

Next, Philippians 4:2-3, "I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I as you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my coworkers, whose names are in the book of life." Paul's coworkers in spreading the gospel were women. They were leaders. They certainly weren't silent as they were working to spread the gospel. A deacon (Phoebe) was not silent or she could not have been a deacon.
