im planning on buying a 50 pound draw recurve bow please help?
im planning on buying a 50 pound draw recurve bow, 28 inch draw length.. (my draw is 29 so i think one inch over draw wont kill it) im planning on spending a few hundred dollars here and live in california and plan on using it for hunting, ive got my heart set on that specific bow and its the alrgest they make in the specific brand. im a male 6 foot 1 inch and about 190 pounts in decent shape, should i go with a higher draw? can i use it for hunting in california? please help its all wood medievil style bow, i dont like modern hunting equipment.
A 50-lb draw weight, at 28 inches draw-length, is plenty for hunting nearly anything found anywhere in California (perhaps not a large Grizzly, but with proper shot placement and a properly-sharpened broadhead on a properly made arrow, it is still very much possible...). 50 pounds of draw-weight is enough to take down African animals such as Kudu, so it's plenty enough for North American game.
Just so you know, all modern, mass-produced bows (and many custom-made bows) are measured for draw-weight at 28 inches of draw-length; this is in accordance with AMO Measurement Standards; the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization (AMO) is now the Archery Trade Association (ATA).
I doubt that "extra" inch of draw will affect the bow at all, although it will raise the actual draw-weight by about 2.5 pounds.
As for being able to use the bow without hurting either your accuracy or body, I have personally witnessed large, "physically fit" people (they lift weights, they work out at least four days a week, they are "strong") NOT be able to draw even a 35-lb bow properly. It has less to do with the person's physical weight, height or whether they are "in shape" than it does with how strong their shoulders, back and hand muscles really are.
Example: I am 5' 8", approx 175-180 lbs, often have trouble lifting more than 85 pounds and I use a 50-lb @ 28" longbow. I know one fellow who is 6' 2", approx 230 lbs, can dead-lift 150 pounds easily -- yet he can barely draw a 40-lb compound bow. The big difference: I have conditioned my archery muscles to be able to handle the draw-weight, and he has not. You should be able to draw that bow back without shaking.
Try this with any bow you are looking to buy: Hold it as though intending to shoot it, then swing it down to the inside of your bow-arm knee (if shooting "right-handed", the bow is at your left knee; "left-handed", it is the opposite); you will be bent over at the waist, and your knees should remain as straight as possible. Now try to draw the string back to "anchor" -- if you have ANY problem doing this, you need to use a bow with a lighter draw-weight. (this is called the "Elephant Test"; it works with ANY kind of hand-held bow)
Hunting in California with a bow... The only "draw-weight requirement" I can find in the regulations is in Section 354 (f): "No bow or crossbow may be used which will not cast a legal hunting arrow, except flu-flu arrows, a horizontal distance of 130 yards." Even though it is relatively easy to launch an arrow more than 100 yards from almost any bow, I find this requirement to be extremely stupid, since the AVERAGE bowhunting distance is only about 30 yards. Anyone taking a shot at an animal 130 yards distant should be using a rifle, not a bow. (just one of many reasons I do not live in California...)
Best of luck to you, and Keep Your string Dry.
Outdoors: Archery area hits the mark
Watching an arrow fly true evokes special feelings that maybe only an archer can understand. Walking the archery course at the Auburn Sportsmanand#8217;s Club, I passed a number of highly realistic, three-dimensional animal targets set up throughout the forest. They nostalgically sent me back many arrows ago.
