What's the best and safest way to unwrap drums?

I have a Gretsch Catalina Mod Kit which is about 4 years old. I read an article in the May 2008 Modern Drummer where one guy did this and said that it sounded much better without the wrap on. I'm just worried that I'd ruin the shells. Any suggestions? Or are there any websites out there that can guide me in the right direction?
